Say I want to take my key fob apart, put the guts in something else, let's say a sonic screwdriver replica, would that work? Would it fit?
Answer 1) if you never need to press buttons, (you always keep the fob in your pocket) then yes, anything non-metallic you can put it in should be fine. Answer 2) If you need to press the buttons, I would work at encasing the entire fab in the new shell.
I have the remote AC button but I never press any buttons. I keep my fob in my purse and only have to remove it when I need to unlock the door to the house which requires a key. Do you think it'd fit into something like this? ThinkGeek :: Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver of the 10th Doctor
None of the sonic screwdriver versions I saw was as wide as my fob. Sorry. I suspect you want more light saber diameters. Star Wars Darth Vader Electronic Lightsaber Toy : Target http://www.amazon.com/Original-Trilogy-Vaders-Lightsaber-Pretend/dp/B00E4V7K5E/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8
That's way too big. I don't want to carry that around. At least a sonic screwdriver can fit in my purse.
It's easy enough to take the circuit board out of the keyfob. Just insert the end of the mechanical key into the screwdriver blade size opening at the end of the keyfob and twist. The case will open up, and the board can be removed. Or just follow any instructions for replacing the battery. The simplest protective enclosure for the circuit board would be one of those small ziplock bags sold for pills. Just don't sit on it...
Take the mechanical key (with your house key attached) out of the fob. Leave the fob in your purse and keep the mechanical key(s) wherever you think is best.
Just curious, Why? If you keep it in your purse what difference does it make how it looks?? Security? Or just Fun?? Not being critical, I just my like your reasoning.
Not sure how similar yours is, but the circuit board for my fob is surprisingly smaller and better shaped for a "cylindrical" cross-section profile than the one from my old Sienna: width: 20mm (22mm including the battery bracket, which is moddable) length: 45mm thickness: 9mm (both battery bracket and chip foam rubber cushion are flush)
For the sheer pleasure of saying that I can open my car with the sonic screwdriver. Can't tell me that wouldn't be awesome?!
