My little 3 year old kicks the back seat

put a strap-on TV monitor, her favorite art work, something she treasures on the back. She'll stop kicking it.

Give her 7 year old sister a treat when she jumps out to school and say "this is what we get for being a good girl and not kicking our seats". The 3 year old will eventually learn there's no reward for kicking and stop

 

She's three. That's what they do. Short of duct tape, give her something to distract her, as mentioned above.

 

Sit up straight instead of leaning back. I'm 6'2 and have no problem with my well behaved grand kids in the back.

 

It could be worse... at least she doesn't get car sick like I did at her age.

 

Lmao I also have a 3 yr old behind me and I'm also about 5'11"... He kicks the heck out of my seat every once in a while and sometimes it scares the you know what out of me! I try to reason with him, but to no avail. Typically happens when I forget his "school snack" which is just his snack when I pick him up from day care. Why that little....

No solution here. Let me know what you come up with.

 

Stick a thick directory in the seat pocket. My grandson never kicks but he always has a distraction like Ipad or Iphone with plenty of kid's games.

 

Granted, there weren't econo-boxes back then, but my parents never had this issue.

That hairy arm reaching around to grab us for not behaving was more than enough incentive to sit still while they were driving.

 

I was just thinking the same. I'm 5'11'' and never had a problem with kids kicking the back of my seat when using the car as a cab. The drunks maybe, but not the kids. My own kids were told not to do it and don't.

Just hope I don't ever sit in front of the op and his kids on a flight.

 

Are you suggesting that children are trainable??

 

A good Charlie Horse is a powerful motivator to make a kid sit still and behave.

Not to judge, but too many parents seem to be afraid to discipline their children.

Think of it this way, if they are acting up while you are driving, they are endangering both you and everyone else in the car because you are distracted from driving. Praise them for behaving, punish them when they do not. Let them know there is a time to play and a time to sit still. When you are driving is such a time. On long trips, have stuff in the car they can amuse themselves with WITHOUT being a distraction.

 

Who is the parent in this situation ?

I have never had any of my children, or grandchildren now, kick the back of my seat more than once. I must have one of those hairy arms mentioned above. :0

My 2 yr old has kicked the seat twice and the door the same.

We exchanged words and I don't think it'll happen again (hopefully!)

I keep her on the passenger side though so the seat is a little further forward too

 

My daughter has a three-year-old of her own now, and even though neither rides (or rode) in the back of an enono-box, this isn't a problem about the size of the car, but rather "Parenting 101."

Granted.....we only had to raise one daughter, and everybody knows that raising two is a lot more than twice the work however (comma!!!) it seems like you might need to work on your unit's 'chain-of-command.'
I get to babysit my granddaughter more than I used to be able to watch her mom, but there is never a problem between us over which one is in charge.

Leave for school a little earlier.
it will leave you some free time to be able to pull off the road and have a frank conversation or two about kicking the back of the seat.

Either that, or let the 3-year-old drive.
As crazy as that sounds, it will only accelerate a process that's already under way.

Give your child a little incentive not to do it. The next time he kicks once, pull the car over, get out and spank his nice person. Then tell him it will be harder next time. I'll guarantee you it will work. My Father never had that problem with me. I knew what would happen if I did any of that stupid stuff. Try a little discipline.

 

Nothing like a roadside beating to instil some discipline. Unfortunately a hairy lesbian made beating your children illegal in my country.

Unfortunately there's no simple solution. We went through it a while back (with twins) I tried bribery, positive reinforcment,warnings, screaming, yelling, death threats, and various combinations thereof. Nothing really worked until they outgrew it.

 

Spare the rod, spoil the Prius back seats.

 

Kids know if you don't mean it. "do that again and I'll be very cross" means nothing. "do that again and I'll turn round and go back home and you won't be going to the park" and MEAN it, does or did.
