WS ATF Drain and Fill - dealer struggles

    I end up paying about half you paid just for the items, so your charge is downright reasonable compared to the outrageous prices we usually see people post. Except for the bulb, which is ridiculous.

    Agreed, the bulb charge was ridiculous, but at that point I genuinely didn't care, and the wiper replacement was free....Call it a wash?

    If they did all that I do agree they did charge a fair price. What area do you live in or what dealership was that?

    they charged you for 5 quarts of oil.

    i would say they did the tranny oil, all very reasonable. can you tell us how this insurance works? i've never heard of such a thing, thanks!

    He didn't know either -- it is just a label on the form that they use to notate a discount. In the same way they charge for '5' qts of oil. All that matters is the end price(s).

    The most valuable tool is the shop service manual. IMO. Learning how to read and use it is one of the biggest chores most of us will experience with out cars. Although once we do put in the effort I'm confident we will understand much more about what needs to be done at each service interval for the car. That Multi Point Vehicle Visual Inspection listed on the invoice is also in the shop manual, explained in detail. And the details change for almost every service interval which are not simple fluid change service intervals. We can get the list by finding the maintenance minder reset instructions and following the cross-reference in the shop manual to the service interval we are preforming.
    The helms shop manual was the first thing I tried to get when I got my Prius home. Unfortunately, Toyota has not published the latest models manuals publicly yet, at least not the PiP's

    But remember, that even though reading up on the proper way to approach a service or repair is very useful, there is no substitute for going to the exact location and doing some preliminary exploration in the service / repair area. That exploration is what helps us understand what the pictures and diagrams in the manual are trying to help us see.

    All of the service intervals also include a brake inspection, either just visual lookover, or more in-depth. Now whether they're doing any more than a half-hearted glance over is debatable, but if they're NOT doing tire rotation, you've pretty much decided it for the them.

    After my experience with my brakes on my 2008 Prius, I am not overly concerned about them at this point. I was on original pads at 146,500 miles, with plenty of life left (I could look at how many many mm were left if I dig through my old service records). The majority of my 90k miles were all highway with very few stops, so the friction brakes should see less than normal use for a car of it's mileage. This vehicle in particular used to see 110 mile round trip commutes 5 days a week for 2.5 years, until my wife got a job closer to home and I started to drive it on a more regular basis. I take back roads and avoid traffic like the plague, so again, I am usually not braking heavily. They still take a brake pad measurement. Anything else I should be concerned about during a brake inspection?

    I DID have the rotors resurfaced on my 2008 because the friction brakes saw heavy use in Los Angeles traffic for the first 60k miles. Hour long commutes twice daily for 25 miles. Those rotors were definitely warped.

    I live about 25 miles SE of Raleigh, this was Leith Toyota, and my other option is Fred Anderson Toyota. I bought the car from Toyota of Goldsboro.
