I was considering a Prius for my wives commute and with an open mind began to list all the hybrids available. If we were to buy a prius it would have been the prius five. Now I see the accord hybrid and everything on paper seems better than the prius excepting the fact that prius is a hatchback with the benefits that naturally follow a hatchback design. Both seem to cost appr 35k.The EPA fuel mileage is appr 50 mpg on the accord. Now I have heard conflicting reviews about this number in the different reviews I came across.I was wondering if anyone of you hybrid pro's would give some insight regarding this matter. The car would be driven purely on mountainous freeway terrain.

    TIA

love everything about it except the price and lack of real world reliability record.

if you go to fuelly, you will see that they are averaging 47 mpg. some do better, some worse. mountainous highway terrain sounds worse, idk, what do you get in your prius?

Have to hand it to Honda though, and a host of other manufacturer's for bring newer and better hybrids to the market even after they sometimes made a few missteps.

Better for all of us that share this earth that these cars maybe pollute a little less than those that came before. I still give Toyota the biggest high five though for bringing us the Prius way back when, and doing a darn good job of it.

I look forward to see the new model when it comes... and based on my Prius experience and previous Toyota experience, it will be tough to make me switch away from the Toyota brand.

Please do give a reason why you would or have not considered a Camry Hybrid. Do the math on the amount of gas difference on filling up 40 MPG (Camry) vs. 50 MPG. cars after 500 miles. Couple gallons.

Camry Hybrid XLE is very well equipped even w/ navigation at $30,600 and they are discounting thousands to make room for the revised 2015's coming.
Have to go up to over $35k Accord Hybrid touring to get nav, but yeah, at that price you get leather, DRCC, FCW, LDW, 2 position seat memory, HDD audio.

The camry can win the ugliest car contest very easily. Not that the accord is a winner but its much better looking and equipped than a camry at the top tier model.I am not going to reward lazy nice person designers from toyota for their design.Saying that,i must admit that in the looks department the fusion is the winner . The Prius looks good in a strange way to my eyes.I was more curious about the specs of a accord Hybrid compared to the Prius.

I think it's expensive, and unproven....but I also know for a fact that it's going to be more fun to drive than a Prius (almost anything is), and it's going to get 'almost-Priuslike-gas mileage'.

    Worth it?
    Not for me.

If I'm going to buy a $30,000 car to "save money in gas" it's going to be a Pip or a Volt, and I'll get some of my tax money kicked back to me.
The market is absolutely inundated with 4-door, 5 pax, FWD bubble shaped cars so there are better ones out there for me personally.
Theoretically you will get some or even most of your hybrid premium back - although I'd wait a few years and see if they hold together.
It does have some impressive "numbers".....but so did FOMOCO's cars. ;)
OTOH, The Accord is the BENCHMARK for 4-door, 5 pax, FWD bubble shaped cars, and it appears that the tree-hugger version of that impressive car is still.....impressive.

I looked on Fuelly, which I take with a BIG dose of saline....because hybrid owners fudge their numbers more than FORD does!
...No data there but C/D averaged 41mpg, which tells me that an adult driver might get about 45 mpg for a $32,000 car.

I'm guessing that they'll sell well.
    Even with $2.98 gas.

I'm less optimistic overall, and I doubt people who are not particularly motivated to buy Honda will find it a competitive car compared to the Prius. The price difference is just too high.

The first 5 years of hybrids I thought Toyota was the high road (more expensive, better MPG) while Honda would fill the low road. Boy was I wrong.

I believe it has to be ~ 50mpg.

Fuelly users appear to be getting around 45mpg with the Accord hybrid and The Prius drivers around 48mpg. Both of which aren't far off from their combined 47 and 50mpg. The Accord will likely get worse than the Prius on a highway, looking at the EPA rating, but I don't think enough of a difference to greatly increase your fuel costs. The Prius is proven while the Accord's hybrid system is first year. That is the only pause I would have with it. I say test drive them and pick the one that will bring the most happy.

Any idea what speeds you will be travelling on those mountainous highways? If the majority of your driving is going to be highway with little stop and go traffic, I would suggest looking at a new diesel too. Sensibly driven, a diesel will easily beat its EPA rating, and on the highway they are close to hybrids in terms of MPG to begin with.
    Compare Side-by-Side
The Jetta is available as a wagon if cargo space is important. Same with the 328d, but the already likely out of your price range sedan will be more out of it as the AWD wagon.

I'm still stuck at your "wives", lol. Anyway:

Our last car was a second gen civic hybrid. It's battery performed decently for maybe 18 months, then started its decline. This was a fairly typical experience. Honda's reaction was abysmal, basically denial and a software patch.

We'd bought Honda exclusively since the early eighty's, but that was the final straw. I'm sure none of the manufacturers are that much better, but Honda is definitely one to turn their corporate back on the customer, if and when things go bad.

There is nothing wrong with the hybrid Accord if you like it. The mpg is decent, the quality is good. It comes down what you prefer. I would not get that fat accord. I don't like the design, don't see the appeal.

i already had the Honda Accord with the exploding camshaft drive belt, a Nissan Sentra whoose timing belt broke also, and numerous Cadillacs with bad woodruff keys and other rotten engine, and GM Oldsmobiles with bad everythings. my Toyotas were wonderful but boring. My 2012 Scion xB was wonderful too,,, then wife and I took test drives of the Prius c during our 2nd free oil change & maint service of the Scion,,, we drove home our brand new 2014 Prius c that very afternoon !!! and my c is my "HotRod c". besides the instantaneous torque of the Prius c, these thing turn 90 degrees without slowing down (ok,,, speed limit is 25mph anyway). but i did have an Alfa Romeo in the 80s and the Prius c is waaaay more fun plus rock solid in torrential rain even on my stock Bridgestone Turanza tires (these OEM that come already on your Prius are GREAT tires i promise you!). the only thing I find lacking is for more power out of the engine,,, maybe needs a bolt-on supercharger for when i floor it?

ps we are considering trading up to the much larger v. itz a minivan Prius that just needs a 2 inch lift kit IMHO

Love the new style of the accord, the accord hybrid and it's features are very hi tech and cool. Just concerned with long term reliability. The last honda hybrids did not perform as well as the Prius + it's just a sedan. I really prefer a hatchback. If honda made the civic as a hatchback hybrid it might be very compelling. the insight is just not a worthy competitor.
