Once again this year the Birdman will be traveling through the north and south western USA on an extended 1 month 5,000 mile vacation road trip. The trip begins on Saturday, August 23. The trip will wind down from Vernon, British Columbia through Kennewick, Wa, Twin Falls, Id, to Henderson, Nv to Palm Srings, Ca and then wind our way up the coast and back to Canada. As we did last year, we will be posting mileage stats and pics. Look for future postings beginning on Sunday. postingshttp://priuschat.com/threads/vernon-birdman-on-the-road.131092/
Hope you have a wonderful trip! What is the big mustache on your car? A Bug deflector? Does it work? Did it affect your mileage?
Unlike last year's trip, our trip will not takes us through your beautiful home state. Our trajectory takes us due south after Twin Falls on (if I recall) route 93 down to our 3rd overnight stop, Henderson Nevada.
It could be a bug deflector but it is more commonly referred to as a stone deflector out this way. They tend to shy away from using salt on the roads here during the relatively rare snowfalls. They instead tend to use sand and small gravel. Great for the environment but not so great for cars. This place has more windshield chip repairers than Starbucks or Tim Horton coffee shops. I jokingly refer to stones as our Provincial bird.
Thanks for all the well wishes. Our first update should be posted either Saturday or Sunday evening. We will post pics and stats.
That route takes you past Great Basin National Park and Cathedral Gorge State Park. Cathedral can be adequately done in a couple hours, but Great Basin needs more time.
I always do some hiking. Cathedral Gorge S.P. has an upper overlook just off highway 93 that you could do as a rest and snack stop. To walk into some of the narrow canyon slots -- starting a few yards wide, narrowing to a foot or so -- requires going to the lower area. Great Basin N.P. is a mountain peak, with good hiking and a wonderful cave tour. But it is further off the route, and demands considerably more time, a half day minimum.
I think I have a similar stone-deflector on ChuggyPig, but I refer to it as a mini-bra. Good luck on your trip - sounds like fun, but looks like you won't have time to join us over here on the Right Coast for 2GoB4 (shame) - Wil
Best wishes and waiting for photos of your trip. As I've mentioned before - barring amphibious or flying cars - can't do a road trip here... YMMV
