Truck to Prius

OP, I purchased a used 2003 BMW wagon before I got my prius, but the reason for purchasing the wagon was I wanted to stop putting so many miles on my truck that I was driving daily - a duramax Sierra.

With the wagon trade in, I'm paying less in fuel and monthly payment on my prius than I would be if I drove my diesel truck daily. My monthly fuel was between $350-400 in the truck.

I still have the truck, but it's rarely driven these days without something in the bed or something in tow.

I believe I've got it good having both. Both are excellent at doing what they are designed to do.

If I delivered that load, the overall weight would be the same at destination........but a lot less cheesecakes.

 

I do not like cheesecake but the smell was very distracting.

 

Corolla or Prius, good choices both. Consider the Prius c also.

I figure 7 cents a mile for Prius fuel and 10 cents a mile for Corolla fuel, so the Prius saves 3 cents a mile. If the car price difference is $4000, the Prius saves money after 4000/0.03 = 133,000 miles. Sooner if fuel prices rise.

 

Consider the room. Prius is more roomy than corolla. The honda dealer tried to sell me their civic citing that it's essentially same class as Prius. But Toyota says differently. It's basically a mid sized so compare that with a Camry. You will find that it's almost same size but Camry comes loaded with accessories if you compare prices.

 

I have land cruiser. The money I'm saving to pay for gas pays for the Prius monthly note. Decided I'll keep the truck and use it for family travel. I just came back from a 4000 miles. Paid close to 900 whereas the Prius would have been low 300's. I just say it's my first class vehicle and the safety of this truck cannot be beat by Prius. Just a thought.

 

Also consider the type of driving you will be doing daily. Is your daily commute usually interstate/highway speeds of 65+ mph? Is it city driving? Any traffic to factor in?

The Prius will do very well (50+ mpg) in city driving and some light, constant moving traffic (under 45mph) while the Corolla will struggle to achieve 40mpg. On the highway, the mpg difference is close to make the Corolla a better purchase of you can do without the extra space of the Prius.

You should be able to manage fuel economy in the low 40s if you keep your speed below 70 mph

Keep the truck with the addition to the Prius. Thats' what I did6 years ago. As mentioned above each vehicle has its' use. My 2000 F250 Superduty diesel is a great camper and m/c trailer hauler. The Prius is a great DD to work and to camp on the weekends. When I retire, I plan to trailer the Prius to / from Fla for the winter. Come spring, head back to the NE area till the fall season.

The truck also doubles as a heavy, bulky cargo hauler: plywood, gravel, loam, masonry, plumbing, electrical, and wood chips

The Prius can carry 2 x 4 x 8' studs, carpeting, groceries as well as give me great fuel ecomony.

I enjoy the BEST of both worlds.

agreed. I have a 2004 F150 with 200k miles V8 5.4L. The ford does the heavy lifting and towing. I put my 500lb street bike in the back of the bed or the dirt bikes. Prius is the DD and the ford is the driveway queen @ 13mpg. Yep the gas mileage stinks, but it fills in the voids and i can put 20 sheets of sheetrock 10 feet long. as the saying goes don't let a boy do a mans job. That said the Ford sits in the driveway 24/7.
