Truck to Prius

OP: At the risk of stating the obvious: a Prius is not a truck.
Embrace the change. Lots of stories from people going from trucks to Prius, but I cannot think of a single instance of an owner then switching back to a truck or even writing that they wish they could.

Your timing is perfect. The lull in gas prices will get you a great Prius price. Off-hand I think at least 10% off msrp, perhaps as much as a 15% discount. This actually gives you a get-out-of-jail card, since if you find you hate the car just wait for the next jump in fuel prices and then switch.

 

For some reason, the lady who first went to get these, could only fit 24 of them in her Yukon. I asked for the box that holds 6 cheescakes and put it in several places in the back of my v and promised that if they ordered 96 more, I could bring them 110 miles back home. I was very conservative as you hate to have to abandon cheescakes by the side of the road. I wonder if the United Methodist Women will be selling cheesecakes again this year.

What did the Yukon lady say ?

 

I did not fuss at the Yukon lady, she is a very short lady with a really tall car, and she could not lift the cheesecakes on top of one another. Captain's chairs in the rear positions reduced her load floor, and she could not lift the boxes to fit in the chairs. The Yukon is an almost useless SUV. The v is an empty box right to the back of the front seats, although I wish the floor was level. (in theory, I could fold up the rear seats for more passengers, but I never do)

 

Respectfully, my comment didn't say the seats are more comfortable because they are Softex. IMHO, they are more comfortable because they can be adjusted more via the power controls than the standard seats with their limited adjustment options, be they Softex or cloth. At this point, I'm not sure we're going to like the Softex either, but the seats themselves are much more comfortable than the standard ones that were in the Prius we rented in 2010. At that time, that was my only real complaint and we both said we'd opt for better seats, if available, when the time came to buy, and we did. I'm sure a lot of people who agree the power seats are more comfortable would prefer cloth too and, like us, probably don't need them heated. But I know from experience the heat can come in handy during our travels. When we get to Yellowstone in a couple of weeks, it looks like we'll get to see how well the heating part works, it's in the 30's in the morning there now.

 

Pretty nice load you have there. It never dawned on me that a Prius with the seats folded down will take an 8' 2x4. Another reason I may sell my Dakota.

 

Keep the truck and buy a Prius. Each has its purpose.

I use my 2013 Tacoma, and I use my 2010 Prius, for what they do best.

 

Traded a 2007 Tundra V8 for a 2014 Prius 3. I just didn't need the truck anymore. Can't fault it though; it was a great truck. I love the Prius. I drove many a car before deciding (Ford Focus, Chevy Volt, Mazda 6 and CX-5, Ford Vision, and Honda Accord Hybrid)...all good cars. But the history of the Prius and the way it drove along with the good deal I was offered, finally swung me to the Prius. So far I have no regrets. Now instead of seeing how fast I can enter the freeway with that 381hp engine...I see how long I can keep the display in the ECO range on the display. Great for the wallet. If I need a truck...there's always U-Haul rental.

Please post again regardless of your decision. I would love to have a 4x4 and a convertible, but then reality convinced me to buy a Prius. When I really need either of the others, there are always rentals and I intend to avail myself of those next year. Truth be told, I can probably get a 4x4 fix by running up to Sedona and taking a Pink Jeep tour of Red Rock country.

 

I have an 06 Tacoma Sport and got a 2014 Prius 3. I decided to keep the truck for the same reasons that others mentioned that you can't beat the feeling of sitting up high, I only drive my truck on the weekends and I sure don't miss the $70-$75 fillups. As far as the Prius and comfort well can't really compare to the ride of the truck and it gets some getting used to being so close to the ground. The gas savings on the Prius is the main reason why I got one. I have absolutely no regrets getting the Prius only wish I had done it much sooner.

 

I've owned a truck since I started driving more than 40 years ago (except for a two-year period where I thought all I needed was a sports car). During that time I borrowed my dad's truck when I needed one. As you can see from my icon I own two Prii, but what you can't see is the truck sitting in the garage - and it does a lot of that. My 2006 F-150 crew Lariat is there when I need it, but rarely gets more than 6K a year put on it. We used to use it all the time when my daughter was showing dogs (lots of stuff to haul), but that ended about a year after we got the truck. One year later we bought our first Prius - waited 12 weeks. Never owned one or rented one before. The test drive we took in the only one the dealer had sold us when we saw the gas mileage and realized how roomy the car was.

We now own two (daughter claimed the 08 to take to college) Prii and still have the truck. It does get used at least once a week for something - hauling trash, getting stuff at the local big box hardware/lumber. Most important trip each year for the truck is the trip to the beach - seats five comfortably, has large, leather buckets up front and rides extremely well. Mileage on the 600 mile-trip is around 18.5 mpg. Around town we get about 14.5 mpg - respectable, but a far cry from the 47+ we get in the Prii.

I have to agree with many on this thread. Rent one and drive it. Take it for a nice long trip (4-5 hours) and see how it feels. It definitely will be a change from the truck, but as a daily driver and a moderate trip taker you can't beat it. And yes, you can load them up. Our 2012 has more amenities than the high-end truck (albeit it is 8 yrs. old) and we wouldn't think twice about having both. Probably always will.

 

If you can afford it...which is a big question.

But if you can afford it, keeping the truck and adding the Prius I think is the best answer.

I can't afford it myself, BUT I think the best possible combination of two vehicles would be a Prius for almost everything, and a truck for those times you want utility.

However, I don't know if that's an option for you or not.

 

You can't go wrong with a Prius! I have five vehicle, each own has their own use... Think of them as hand tools. you can never have enough vehicles.. haha

Lastly, on the average i would spend around $30-$40 in gas per day driving the Truck. i now spend $4-$16 / day in gas and around $10 in food per day. The Truck was literally eating my wallet; seemed silly that the truck was costing a fortune... When i got the truck in 2004 gas was $1.20 a gallon. now it is 3x - 4x the cost. I am very happy parking my truck... No worries.

Driveway Queen = 2004 Ford F150 193,000 miles = Sledge Hammer. (when you just need the capacity, towing 14' trailer, doing a demolition on a beater house or loading up #6 300-500 lb boulders in the back of the bed, moving out of your 20' storage unit). I drive the Ford F150 only as a last resort if i really need to haul something. 11 mpg in town (los angeles)

Daily Driver DD = 2014 Prius = Leatherman = does everything pretty good, MPG is outstanding. Resale value is phenomenal.

Garage Queen = 2004 BMW 325ci 43,000 miles = electric drill. (for when you want to make round holes.) it is set up with lowered suspension and it is not super fast, but i would guess run circles around my Prius. the mileage is 27mpg highway. funny thing i haven't driven it for well over a year...

I'm new here myself. I went from a gas guzzling Crown Vic to a Prius 2. I have a 80 miles round trip to work everyday 5 days a week. The gas savings alone pays for 1/3 of the car payment every month. While you might not feel as "manly" in a Prius but after you go 300 miles and only using half the tank of gas you wont care at all.

 

I came to from a 4x4 z71 Tahoe. To a 2014 Prius 4. I can't complain. But I also got a 1995 Nissan pickup that I use to move anything and drive to a from work. I get dirty and greasy at work so I don't want to get the Prius dirty.

 

I paid $21,621 for my 2014 Prius 2 last week. End of the month is near so dealers are willing to make a sale. With the release of the 2015's soon is also a good reason to buy now. I expect a $2,000 price increase on a 2015.
