26,000 Miles and all four tires are bald

Welcome to the cheap Yokohama crap. Same thing happen to me. Go with Michelin anything!

 

Those tires would probably fail some state vehicle inspections.
I got less than 25k on both my 2008 and 2010 Prius. I tend to drive fast on the curves of back country roads.

 

Low tire pressure? Excess toe-in? At 20k, we have essentially no wear on the stock Toyo proxes A20s at 41/40psi and factory suspension alignment.

 

We've had terrible wear on our v and the OEM bridgestone turanza'. The shoulders were getting bad after 1 year 10k and factory pressures. Toyota refused to pay for alignment but we did it anyway. Now after year 2, 20k and 38/36, it's still happening. Toyota recommended buying cheaper / harder tyres next time! Centre tread is OK and I expect a lot better >50K.

 

Emcguy, edge wear is a symptom of underinflation. IMO, Toyota's recommended pressures are too low. On my Gen2 even at max sidewall pressure I was still getting edge wear.

 

Factory recommended tire pressure is intended to be under-inflated by any other standards. Its meant to provide a balance of comfort and safety, not proper wear or performance.

 

I'm tending to agree with jimn and rdgrimes. The problem is I ran for 40/38 for a while and, around my suburb, it felt very stiff. I felt every bump.

 

Same here, it's all relative to the road conditions in your area re tyre pressure. I raised min again to 46/44 for a few weeks and could bear it. Reduced it to 42/40 and it's a little better, but will have to reduce it to 40/38 for comfort. Some of the roads around Dublin City are brutal. When I do a run on the motorway with the tyres at 46/44, the ride is fine

26k isn't great out of a set of tyres though. I have 10k on my Goodyear Efficient Grips and they look like new

 

I've been getting about 40-50k out of my 15" GoodYear Integrity's that came with the car. I switched over to another brand years ago, got such a bad ride from them that I immediately went back to the Integrity and have been getting them ever since. Today the guy at Americas Tire said that Yokohama Avid is one that a bunch of Prius owners are getting here in SoCal so I thought I'd give them a try, I'll let you know.

Question about the ride:
I've got 202,000 on my '05 and was wondering if anybody has changed their shocks and how much difference did it make?

 

I have 17 Toyo's closing in at 25K with still good thread. Did not measure it though. Will get back and update info. Thread wear also depends on how hard and often you use your brakes. City driving wears out tire faster than vehicles being driven on highways. My commute is via highway 70 miles a day. Rotation done every 5K miles.

 

Bridgestone Turanza tires are nothing but garbage. Buy yourself a good set of Michelins.

Current factory tires doing well though, just in for 40k tune up and not an issue.

 

I have the same make, but Yokohama BluEarth S34 P205/60R16. I've had them on now for 7,900 miles and they look like new. I was a bot worried, due to the obvious angst against them here and elsewhere. But I've always had great luck with Yokohama's, and never with Michelin (unless you count great luck with the original Michelin X tire back in the 70's).

We have two cars. The Camry Hybrid has had Yokohama AVID ENVigor, not an LRR tire, on it since April 2011. Mileage increased from the Bridgestone LRR's that practically melted off the rims, and they now have 40,000 miles on them. They look almost new. I've had tremendous mileage out of my Yokos, probably double what I've had with any Michelins, which I had to replace early on my other Camry because hydroplaning was such an issue.

I'm not buying it.

 

On my 2010 with 15 inch wheels, the original Yokohama Avid S33's were 90% gone (bald) at 25,000 miles. I replaced them with Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max and at 25,000 miles, they still have 75% tread. They also ride better and make less road noise at higher pressure (44psi).

 

It's amazing the different results obtained from different model tires. Bridgestone had a complete dog and a good tire. All of my Michelins have been crap, Yokos have been great. Haven't had Goodyears for a very long time. Our first General snow tires have gone through their fourth season now.

 

All that drifting you do?

 

I've had nothing but good from Michelin for the last 30+ years. Experience so positive I buy a new car only with them on it.

One experience with Yokohama's was very poor wear and noise but 10 year ago and on a very different car.

Alignment means a lot and the cars aren't guaranteed right from the factory or checked before delivery. Plus the alignment specs from Toyota give a "from this to that" set of numbers that can be said to be "within spec" but which will give different results depending which end of the range you are at. The experience of the alignment mechanic matters.

 

No more drifting for me, all that tire smoke tends to foul the cabin filter real fast.

 

Gathered Prius Pilots - FWIW FYI, here is a snapshot of the OEM Toyo Proxes A20 P215/50R17 90W tires on my Prius v(vee) taken recently at 25,550 miles. They all look like this tire in the photo.

I run them Up-Pressured at 51 PSI Front/50 PSI Rear. Honest Abe says, "I'm doing fine with mucho miles of driving remaining on them."

 

I have a Rav4 which is terrible on tires. I have 75K miles and have replaced the tires 3 times and the third set is already at 60%. I finally asked a local guy what was up with that. He said if you drive more than a couple miles a day on gravel you can cut the life of a tire by half. That is what I do so I can only assume this is the issue. Hopefully since the Prius V is lighter it won';t be as bad. I buy tires that are rated for 90k.....they don't last for half of that!
