You can adjust your mirrors to eliminate almost all your blind spots. Learn how at this article at Car and Driver. I've been using this technique for many years, but does take some getting used to.
Have not used aftermarket blind spot monitor but the OEM BSM on my Sienna works pretty well. It also comes with cross traffic detection that picks up joggers.
My F150 has rear sensors, love them, wouldn't hesitate a second if they were available for the prius, the rear vision is atrocious, the rear camera on the gen3 is superior to the gen2 but having a tone announce distance is IMHO outstanding,<YMMV.
You can go aftermarket. Goshers makes one. It won't operate like the OEMs but at least it'll pick up vehicles in your blind spots. Putting an aftermarket car blind-spot warning system to the test CR tested the entry level. Premium version will probably be more accurate and less false alarms.
