Impressive they lived and might have walked away. Side curtains were not standard until 2007, so it could be an earlier Gen II? Makes me feel like I drive a pretty safe car.
you can do a close up on the video and see the curtain airbags in place on the driver's side....just didn't deploy. Both my 2005 and 2006 has them
This is an offset head on crash, the Prius passenger side hit the truck's left rear corner. That is why the driver survived and side air bag not deployed.
That's what I get for watching it on my iPhone. They were optional until 2007 IIRC. When I was looking for my Prius I would have to ask people with pre-2007's if they had side curtain air bags. The ones without did not do as well in crash testing (duh).
On a side impact on the passenger side, would the side airbags deploy on the driver's side? I was thinking a violent accident like the one in the video would deploy every airbag in the car.
This is offset head on collision not side impact, there is not enough side G-force to trigger the side air bag in this case.
It seems like if the side curtain airbag had deployed, it could possible have pushed the driver into the area that was more damaged by the crash. So in this case, it was safer to not deploy them. Seems they've set up the sensors well.
Gotta say I got the best mpg behind a semi, I tried this a couple times using my dynamic cruise control, wouldn't do it without it
