I just recently bought my first Prius, 2001. I've done most of the work on it myself except a new battery replacement. I'm having problems with the exhaust valve. It sticks and I need to replace the part or find out how to fix the old one. I believe once this is done, I'll only have air compressor and figure out why my radio won't work (driving me nutty with no tunes). Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Btw, for now, I've bypassed the issue slightly, but it is extremely loud when using engine.

Hmmm....not sure what your saying here. How do you know an exhaust valve is stuck? Did a mechanic take the valave cover off?

If an exhaust valve is stuck that means the valve stem is broken and is stuck closed or the spring is broken and is flopping around in the cylinder. The engine would run so rough it wouldn't run I bet. That cylinder would get fouled quickly and plug would stop firing.

Repair would require removing the head and repairing that valve or usually doing a complete valve job. Possibly worn out cams too. Since its a G1 it's probably got alot of miles usually its more cost effective to replace the entire engine because if its got valve issues the piston rings and bearings are shot too.

G1 engines are pretty rare I don't see those on eBay and have never seen one in a junkyard down here. I don't see them on Craigslist either.
Not alot of G1's sold in this area. very rare sighting here to see one. I bet not alot in Ill either. So it's top end repair. Somewhere in the $400-800.

He means the exhaust actuator that is part of the exhaust system.
Not the exhaust valve inside the engine block.

Yes ericbecky...sry, was not clear on that.

And actually I'm a she lol. Don't see too many on here mechanically inclined, I'm sure.

Yes tho, the actuator was what I meant. It gets stuck and when I first got it I got it to loosen up, but it's not a permanent fix because it's stuck open and gets pretty loud

I can fix it, but don't always know the names for certain things lol. Most of the time I call it the " " thingy lol

Here's a video that shows how it should operate.
