I did my oil change today, All the cv joint boots look good. I couldn't see anything wrong. I may wait to see it the noise gets worse. I also checked the transaxel fluid and it is full.

Does it do it on roads with no elevation change? You mentioned up hill and down hill.

Yep, it definitely gets better with time!

It's becoming windows-up AC season by me so the stereo and AC will help make the sound go away. The tint takes away a little bit of the embarrassment. When I roll around my quiet neighborhod I just drop it into neutral before hitting the brakes.
    ... Problem solved.

For now it's mostly parked for a few months on and off while I'm TDY. Nice to drive rentals where problems aren't my problem ;-)

Much like you, I am sick of trying to get it diagnosed and fixed by the dealer , in my case Longo. I turn up the music and ignore the "ticking"

I can honestly say that I have not been happy with the service at the dealership and the overall quality of Toyota's now a day. Next vehicle will NOT be a Toyota.

If it's under warranty, why not keep taking it back til they Fixed it? Do they not have competent mechanics working in one of the largest Toyota dealers in southern California? It took my dealer a few times but they fixed the problem and the last one they knew exactly what to do.

I'm holding off until it does it more often so the dealer can hear it. They gave me a free extended warranty to 100k so I only will have to pay 100.

I have been dealing with the same thing for over 4 years now. Been to 2 different dealerships in my area and miraculously neither one could hear it and i test drove the tech with me on the second attempt. The first one we had the tech drive it while another tech stood outside the car and had them brake when pulling along side of us. Nothing of course. I truly hate it. I love me car otherwise, but it drives me nuts. Just so hard to tune out unless I'm listening to the radio loud. I have posted about this in another spot and it seems this thread has nailed it in proving I'm not alone. Fortunately, it hasn't gotten worse, so I've somewhat learned to deal with it, but would love to find a fix once and for all being that I'll have the car for a few more years. I'm at 107k now so beyond the warranty, but if there was a tech. bulletin I would be super happy. Sadly I don't have the time to spend on here as much as the days of old and I don't always get the notifications that people have replied. I'll do my best to check back and hopefully some day there will be a resolution.

Maybe Toyota could bring in the same NASA engineers that worked the braking / accelerating issue a few years ago! ;-)

Too bad this is not a safety issue as one could put some pressure on Toyota via NHTSA. I wish Toyota would issue TSB on this. Not sure how to lobby for it.

they started to blame it on my "aftermarket suspension" but i kindly attacked back with "putting my OEM TRD springs/shocks back on"

Fixed! After contacting Toyota I was able to get a Field Technical Specialist (FTS) to come to my local dealership and diagnose the problem. The dealer originally thought that the issue was from the TRD springs that are installed on my car. The FTS was able to determine that the cause of the issue was actually from a faulty left front CV axle. Part: 43420-47030 Shaft Assy, FR Drive

I am curious about this statement of "many more miles of drivetrain warranty"...

It is my understanding that the car has a 36000 mile/36 month bumper to bumper warranty - and an additional warranty on the hybrid system (100k miles or more depending on your location). I have never seen anything about a powertrain/drivetrain warranty...

Second confirmation that it is the faulty shaft assembly that's causing the clicking, ticking noise. 43420-47030 for driver side and 43410-47030 for passenger side.
