OEM tires lasted 26k miles

Mine made it to 37,000, with regular balance/rotate/alignment. The guy at the tire store recommended I could try and make it through winter with the remaining tread, but I was sliding around in the snow with poor traction and for me handling was a primary factor.

Replaced with Michelins from Costco for about $400 (they had an in-store coupon that helped). Very happy with the better traction! --Kim

 

I just had my tire rotation and oil done at 25K miles. OEM tires are worn to 4 o the inspection sheet. They were at 8 at 5K miles. I run them at 36F and 34R to try and use them up faster. I get reimbursed for the cost of replacement tires. I'm still averaging right at 50 mpg on display. I guess the slick tread helps offset the wear due to underinflation. I'm looking forward to comforttreds though.

 

I think your milege is low for tires. Perhaps that tire dealer was extra greedy. One good thing about our cars. Only a 15" rim. My Honda has 16" rims and replacing the tires cost around $650.00 for Michelins. I also have AAA and bought lifetime rotating, re-balancing, and have a 100% road hazard pkg. including flat repairs from Tire Kingdom.

I priced tires at Tire Kingdom at around $400.00 out the door with the coverages. I only got 30,000 miles out of my Michelin's that were on both my Hyundai Sonata & Honda Accord.

 

I think you got ripped. I changed mine at 32K miles as shown in this thread. You can see it still mostly passes the penny test. Did your tire dealer show you your tire wear the same way?

I probably could've kept going up to 40K, but with the rainy season coming I wanted to maintain traction in the wet in crazy Socal and the Integrities were getting really really loud.

Went to performance all-season 195/60R15 Yokohama AVIDs which are only 2lbs heavier than the Integrities, and same amount of rotations per mile according to TireRack.com. $350 out the door with tires, installation, rotation, balancing, and four certificates for lifetime free replacement of a tire for any damage.

Can't seem to find any information on these Eclipse tires anywhere. Les Schwab lists it but it doesn't link off their main page. Toyo doesn't list this tire as part of their current product line either.

 

Good grief! Only 26K miles??? Now I remember why I don't like OEM tires..... I'm happy with Bridgestone Turanza LS-H's. Use them on all my other cars and routinely get 50 - 65K miles (depending on driving habits & car) on them.

 

Think I'll be changing mine out soon too. I only have about 23k on them, but the curvy mountain roads I drive every day eat tires, and usually eat breaks if I was driving an ICE only car. I run my tires at 42/40. When the front ones lost their outside edges I rotated to the back (at about 12k miles). Now none of them have any tread on the outside edges and when I take those down hill curves in the rain things get really exciting.

I am inclined to believe that 26,000 miles might be a bit on the low side to "need" to replace the tires. Want, yes that I can see, but need seems just a bit of an overstatement. Of course, I am not aware of what driving conditions your car and tires are subjected to and that could influence how your tires wear and perform significantly.

I have 32,500 on my OEM tires as of now and they still look like they are brand new. In fact, I went to a Prius club meeting last month and a lot of the other owners there were amazed to see that the tires were original and in such good shape.

When the time comes to replace them I will probably go with the comfortreads as everything that I have heard from other owners is that they improve ride considerably.

Of course, the one thing to keep in mind regarding the Les tires purchase is that they did come with free beef so all is not lost.

Oh, and just for the record, I was also not impressed with the jack that comes with the car. It is adequate but not exceptional. I shall hope that I don't have to use it much so I don't see it as a problem.

Sounds like mr Les Schwab got another one yes he took you for a ride, wow a set of four tires costs $400? I paid $190 for a NEW set of 4 firestones in the recomended size. I guess tires would change in price state to state..?

What about car prices? do they change state to State??

There is nothing wrong with OEM tires they are the correct size & width for the car.. next time ask the toyota dealership for the correct tire size also you can look at the sidewall of you car tires....

the OEM tires are very small compared to the size and weight of the Prius,
So you need to slap a set of 17"s on there lol.. Im sorry its really not funny I get so mad when I hear stories like this..... I wouldnt want it to happen to my wife.!! So I have to take care of the cars..
At 26k I lost all 4 of my tires due to alignment was off. fixed the alignment and its been smooth sailing ever since..

 

we should start a tire thread since most, make that SOME, earlier 2004's might need replacing. interesting to see how many miles people get when compared to their terrains, average commutes, tire pressures and locations.

i have almost 23,000 miles, mild weather, self-rotated tires every 5,000 miles, tire pressure, 42/40. tread is at 6. tires still look like they have at least half a life left. so replacement looks to be about 35-40,000. will probably do as others have and replace just before winter if getting close.

i think the determining factor for me is i think i tend to have a lower freeway/city driving ratio. i think it saves my tires a bit and is responsible for my higher than average mileage.

As long as you have enough of the more expensive "halogen" headlight fluid, you should be ok.
