Anyone know of an extended battery add-on that can be purchased for the 2014 PIP. I know previous generation have had them however I cannot seem to find anything compatible with the new PIP
There's a company called Plug In Supply that provides extra batteries. Plug-In Supply | Plug-In Upgrades for the Toyota Prius Quite frankly, if it's more EV range you're looking for, then you should purchase a different vehicle. The prices of these add-on batteries just don't seem to be worth it, especially since you're not getting anything even remotely close to a factory warranty or support.
In general, the charging systems for hybrid batteries are TIGHTLY integrated with the specific battery in the car. Changing the type or capacity of the onboard battery might result in improper charging........or NO charging at all. What you are thinking about doing is a BIG gamble. If you should somehow screw up the connection of the new battery, it might be deadly for the original battery and your HEALTH TOO. I think it is NOT a good thing to try.
I agree, the risks are high, unless the engineering was done properly, and I've seen no guarantee of that.
I also agree. As an electro-mechanical engineer who is currently focused on software system integration, unless you know all of the parameters of the charging system and can ensure they meet all of the specifications of the additional battery components (and I would estimate a 99.9% estimate they do not), then you would be looking at least a partial failure (if not total) of the capabilities you would be attempting to add. Unless you can reverse engineer the charger software or have them release it to you (not realistic), then this is a very high risk gamble.
