Thanks for pointing that out because I was so busy finding the gas station I did not notice! The last 10 miles on the local road allowed pulse-and-glide and maximal use of the uphill and downhill slopes, which probably resulted in the battery charging. Heck, had I known I could have engaged EV mode at the end for a mile or two and made DW even happier!

Remember this idea from an earlier post:

"I feel like I'm being scolded when a trip comes under 55mpg. A blinking "failure" dash light should be included on the next gen. Or maybe a verbal lashing from the on board computer."

Well, this functionality can be cheaply and easily provided by simply acquiring a spouse and having them give you a tongue lashing (aka "nagging" or "connubial conversation") whenever your display scorecard at the end of a trip segment is less than 55 mpg! It worked for us!
Of course, just like in a knife fight, you first have to establish some rules for this negative marital feedback such as recognizing that cold-engine-warm-up handicap on the first driving segment of the day, particularly if it is quite short. But otherwise you can soon nag each other into high-mileage driving habits! DW even accused me of using EV mode to "pad the mpg" by creeping home in our subdivision, but now she does it too!
My son suggests having a big LED display of the current mpg in the rear hatchback window to make sure the other drivers passing us, and specially other Prius drivers, know exactly how well we are doing. But I don't think he's serious.

 

Any prius c make the club? I currently have 500 miles and am showing 67mpg on display my tank is suposed to be 9.5 so if I use 9 gal to be safe and figure 66 mpg that would give me 594 miles. I am nervious to run it out of gas. the distance to empty says 25 miles. I may hypermile the crap out of it and push it over the 600 mile to make this club. I will post back If I do

 

How close is your displayed (computer calculated) mileage to your hand calculated mileage? If you have never checked, I would not push it for the 600 mile club. If they are similar, then give it a whirl.

 

it is usually less than 1 mpg off. lifetime mpg display vs calculated is about .7 mpg off at last fill up. My distance to empty light always leaves me with over a gallon if the capacity is really 9.5. I have only gotten 8.5 in the tank one time. I usually drive a day or two after the display says empty. today the cas said empty and that was at 538.3 miles and if I get 62 mpg for the remainder I should have no issues that should leave me with a couple of days of my usual 10 miles per day. so I think I will throw in my gas can I have for the lawn mower and if I run out I will put that in.

 

My experience is the display can be used to calculate the amount of fuel burned:

• miles / MPG -> gallons

However, the distance is a function of actual, tire diameter, and changes by brand and wear. Comparing a trip meter to mile markers or GPS is the only way I know to figure out the calibration constant.

my statement was compairing the MFD mpg -vs- odometer/gallons at the pump. nothing too technical. I haven't gotten arround to checking my odometer against a gps.

 

I did it, today my trip odometer got to 600.5 miles, on a single tank of gas. the display shows 69.1 mpg fill up took 8.857 so I should be able to drive even longer on the car past the 0 mile to empty. The trip meter was at 538 when it gave the beep and started blinking. This is a prius c and I think the tank capacity is 9.5 gal.

I am thinking I may be able to make the 700 mile club. top off the tank with an extra 1/2 gal and hypermile like crazy.warm weather makes me happy with my mpg!

 

Hopefully someday - went out for a nice drive in the country today with my Prius C- got 60mpg on the leg out (approximately 40 miles) and managed to get 89mpg on the way back. Love to have that return mileage for a 9 gallon fill up.

 

That is great mpg! if you drove that trip 80 miles like 9 times you would have it I think. 9x80=720 miles at 74 mpg display should be enouth gas I put in a one gallon gas can in the back just in case.

 

The trick is to just keep coming back for 600 miles!

As I don't have the patience of some of the other folks, I'm waiting for a stiff wind out of the North combined with a compelling reason to visit South Carolina or Georgia sometime this summer.

 

I'm in on fill-up #6. I am continuing to improve my techniques, but I don't think I will ever make 700 or even hit 600 consistently, but I pushed it a bit to "join the club".

Does this count? Got down to 2 pips my very first tank it was all highway miles. IIRC showed about 479 on the trip meter. Pulled in, filled up and only took about 8.9 gals. Doing the math at 54 actual mpg, I had 162 miles left till empty. 479+162=641 miles on my very first tank with less than 1000 total in the car (got a free tank at the dealership so this was the first I paid for).

 

good job on your mpg, but I dont think it can count, not that I have any authority in this thread. I suggest you drive until the car says distance to empty is 0 then fill up. on my prius c you can drive a long time after is says 0 miles left. have fun getting great mpg is fun

 

I just noticed the 600 mile club today. I maybe i am not an official member because I didn't go by my HSI, but my scan gauge II is much more accurate, only over reporting my consumption by a little over one tenth of a gallon, I think my HSI is drunk, over reporting my MPG and way under reporting how many miles I have left to go in the tank.



Still have over one hundred miles to go, but I am concerned it might not be good for the fuel pump to almost run it dry, so no 700 miler for me

This week, warm and sunny most of the time, 90 rain miles. No special techniques, i havn't learned them yet just try not to use the brakes, easy on the throttle, try to anticipate ahead of time. stock wheels, blinker came on around 550 miles...

 

I hit 602.6 on Wednesday, but unfortunately I ran out of gas and the hybrid battery was exhausted. I drove about 120+ miles after the computer said "0" miles left......but the range after the last fill-up was about 480 miles. The gas can I was carrying had only about 1 gal. in it, which wasn't enough to restart the car (apparently the hybrid system needs at least 1.9 gal. to restart). Many lessons learned during this "experiment"! The driving was a combination of highway and city driving, and hilly and flat terrain.....I live in a hilly area (Central NY), which makes the achievement of 600+ miles a difficult task.

 

The miles after "0" miles left is about right but my 7-8 gas exhaustion tests always restarted after adding 1 gallon. Can you provide more details about what happened?

Which mode, eco, normal, or power was being used?

Also how did you get the car restarted?

I see you have a 2013 model. It is always possible the control laws have changed. My testing was with an early 2010 Prius.

What indicator lights did you see?

Which display were you monitoring when the gas was finally gone?

How did you tell when the last of the gas was burned and driving on just traction battery?

What speed and traffic conditions?

You mentioned the traction battery was exhausted. What was the measurement?

I am interested in trying to replicate your experience which is why the details are important. Mine were before the patches so it is possible there has been a change.

Made it!

2014 Prius 2 - approximately 3400 miles on the odometer. Tires are factory Yokohama S33's at 40/38 psi.

Filled up 10.397 gal. Calculated 57.8mpg compared to MFD 61.0mpg.

My commute is 30.5 miles each way. I live 2 miles from the interstate and the parking deck at the office is 0.5 mi from the instate exit. My commute is all interstate pretty much, but there's some stop and go traffic both ways. I pulse and glide as best as I can while in traffic. When not in traffic, I limit the speed to 65mph and allow the speed to drop to a minimum of 55mph going up a hill. I find when the car is on flat road going 60mph, the mpg seems to hover between 60-75mpg with the HSI throttle bar showing slightly past the center line.

The MFD typically shows between 62-70mpg at the end of each 30 mile trip. I had some short trips in this tank that hurt the mpg. I was showing 66mpg at one point, which shows some hope in a 700 mile tank in the future. Not anytime soon, though.
