    Folks,

I have an 06 base model with the single disc cd unit. I was wondering if anyone knew how many wattsX4 this unit is? I am new to car stereo discussions, but no that my Premier headunit in my Outback was 50X4 watts and it was good enough to push two sets of infinity components.

Will the Prius push the speakers that "sparky" recommends for the front and rear, or do I need an amp? This seems the cheapest and hopefully the best upgrade I can give my system. I have still yet to solve the ipod situation for my 2006. Do amps have inputs, so I can run the iPod through it? If so I bet I can mount the amp, if I got one, under the passenger seat.

I am seriously considering sparky's suggestion of putting the mini sub in the storage with it wired from the existing speaker wire split from the pillar location. Will this work as well, or am I wasting my money by not buying the amp to control everything? I am worried about taking the dash apart, not the extra cost of the amp. But if I have to take the dash apart, I will do it, not let some teenager with a horiffic hangover do it at SpeakerCity.

    Any feedback would be appreciated,

    Thanks

    ajrowell,

I also have an '06 base model. I added front (Infinity 6010cs) and rear (Alpine ???) speakers, powered from the stock head unit. Sound quality is much improved.

I think I won't add a sub or an amp because I don't really have the time and it sounds ok without. I don't get great bass, but still way better than stock.

Not sure about power from head unit. It's not great but I think it's sufficient for me, for now.

Great, what was your estimated cost and how long did the whole process take you to install?

Here's a review of a Bazooka subwoofer put in a Prius. It gives some costs, including installation.

$182 for all the speakers (ebay) and maybe 4 hours for install. It goes really quickly after you do the first one. I still need to rework my rear speaker mounts. The stock speaker holes are pretty huge and you'll need to fabricate a mount to seal them up. Another idea I got from "thejq" was to mount the speaker to the stock speakers (after cutting out speaker cone and snapping plastic off the back) and that worked ok in the front.

I added the Kenwood KSC-SW1 S150W Subwoofer and changed the rear speakers to the Infinity Kappa 62.7i - 6 1/2" Speakers. I can't tell you the difference in sound quality. Very much worth the effort. I decided to not to upgrade the front speakers, since I was so pleased with the quality of sound.

The subwoofer and rear speakers combined took me about 3 hours to complete. I don't work fast and I don't cut any wires. I had a service tech at Best Buy tell me to simply strip the shielding and solder the wires directly. It made it much easier to tap the rear speakers off the amp, but in your situation you don't have the JBL Amp, so I don't know where you would tap off for the rear speakers to add the subwoofer. Changing out the rear speakers is a 2 hour job at most.

    Good luck,
