I've read through a couple of the threads here discussing 2 versus 4 ohm speakers, speaker wires, and some Infinity speakers that gave me serious sticker shock when I looked them up on Crutchfield.com. I have the non-JBL system with nav, and am looking for a speaker that would drop into the existing holes and provide a little more punch. I'm no audiophile and don't want to replace cabling or install an amp - just looking for an incremental improvement. Any suggestions?
kenwood-kfc-1664S $50 a pair at crutchfield. come with wiring harness and speaker adapter. get new dash squakers, as they make the most difference in the car polk dsi350 @ $30 or so a pair.
They are a bit of work. However, the door speakers are pretty muffled due to their location. The dash speakers give a strait shot to your ears. While I was installing my amp and wiring, for about a week I was listening to just the dash speakers. It wasn't super wonderful, as there was no bass, but it was listenable. Just the door speakers sound pretty bad. Set your fader to full rear, and you will hear quite muffled sound. Use spiderman's guide, and it won't be so bad to replace them. The polk's are inexpensive, efficient and will make more difference per dollar than any other mod. Before I had the polks in, I was using the pioneers. The pioneers are a tiny bit smaller, and a tiny bit less efficient. It is worth the effort to get the dash speakers replaced. When I had the speakers powered by the factory head unit, I added a 2 ohm resistor in series with them as well as the front door speakers when I changed the capacitor to allow much lower frequencies to get to the dash speakers. I don't know if it was necessary, but I was worried I might cook the factory head unit with too low an impedance load. Now that I have an external amp, I removed the resistors as well as the bass blocker capacitor.
Use Polk in the doors, 2 way will be fine, you can leave the dash speakers in place. Much better sound. the door speakers have no mid- high rage sound,
