So I am contemplating the move from gen iii to v. Has anyone experienced the cold start knock that happens in the gen iii? I didn't see anything in search, but sometimes it is user error. Thanks!
I have 16,000 miles on my 2013 Prius v. The cold start knock happened to me twice during the first 1,ooo miles. The first month I had the car, I was trying to learn how the nav and voice commands worked. I had the car in ready mode and the engine started. I shut it down after a few seconds. I did that a couple of times. The next time it started I had the cold start knock. I sounded like the engine was going to self destruct. When the engine starts in ready mode, I always let it run until it automatically cycles off. Haven't had the knock since. Not exactly a user error thing but it appears it can be avoided through user intervention.
Yup. Twice in the first 1000 miles or so and once recently at around 19,000 miles. When it happens I shut the engine off, let it sit a minute and restart without further problems. I agree it sounds like the engine is going to self-destruct but I've not read of any long term consequences. I brought it up with my dealer when the car was new but he hadn't heard of the problem.
Knocking happened to my v a couple of times at around 30-40,000km. That was just over 1 year ago, has been fine since. At 71,000km now.
I had this happen once with my 2012 Prius. I pulled it in the garage the night before, the engine started and I immediately killed it. The next morning, backed it out and it shook like hell for the first 10 seconds. I wasn't too surprised since my old 2000 Honda Civic had done that numerous times for the exact same situation. I now let the engine go for about 10 seconds if it happens to start when I move it.
