4th generation coming 2015!

Interesting...So...No Gen IV in the fall or **early** next year? Is Dianne right afterall? She announced the end of last year that we will have to wait a while for the Gen IV plugin.

Is it not even going to be a short year? Either way. We will know soon... :O

Does the acceptance to build a fleet of cars equate to a later date for arrival of a new model Toyota ? I don't fully understand what the Donlen build-up means. That said - I am glad I bought my Prius this year Feb vs. waiting around for the Gen 4.

 

Guess I'll be nursing my 2012 C for a while longer.

They don't really say it's the 2nd gen Prius, maybe the 2015 model will have the new Silicon Carbide tech, I don't know. But I suspect that it has to be a new prius...It's May 20th, where's the news? :O

 

Thanks for the link. I would expect generation IV to have silicon carbide components in its PCU by 2015. Toyota knows technology like this is pertinent in keeping its dwindling competitive advantage.

The current incentives are really good. I'll bet they hold off any updates until after they expire on June 2nd.

 

I don't think the C was a flop. I don't think the insight was, the insight was just not gaining traction especially compared to the civic hybrid. It was around this time that Toyota announced 2009 was a carryover model. No mention in all of May could very well mean...Fall is the 4th gen, right?

 

Reuters reports that the Silicon carbide semiconductors will not be going into Toyota cars until 2020.

SiC could be starting in G4 and starting in 2020.

SiC diodes have been available for a while now, and are a huge plus to converters using silicon switches. The push is on for usable 3-terminal SiC devices (MOSFETs) but they still need work in design, manufacturing and packaging.

Maybe G4 will get SiC diodes and G5 in the 2020 time frame will get SiC MOSFETs if they are ready by then.

May 20th 2008, the 2009 Prius was confirmed to be a carry-over. It was June or so when the Gen III was announced and that 2009 would be a short year.

Well, here we are May 21st 2014...If 2015 model was a short or carry-over, shouldn't it have been announced already? Anyone talk to dealerships yet?

I wouldn't be surprised if the next gen prius came out soon since those leaked next gen prius photos didn't look like much of a body change.

Actually, I'd say Toyota should be concerned. It is all about striking the right balance between how much of R&D/testing goes into G4 vs the risk of being late to market - easy said than done. I too will be hoping that Toyota will do the right thing as it did in the past but I would not discount the competition. In 2009 when G3 came out, what was the real competition/alternatives around? Just Honda but today we have several other key players and the Hybrid/EV market has evolved and become more mature since then.

Whilst I agree that Toyota should take the time to do a good car - it is difficult to ignore the clock ticking.

 

So I talked to the dealership, same one that said the 2015 Prius would be a carrover, and they say the Fuel Cell is definitely coming. Plus it's announced and on the website.

I'd find it hard to believe the the Gen IV won't be shown in Detroit or Los Angeles. And you predict NS4 ahead of Gen IV which has been shown twice already? Not to mention the New York show pushes the Gen IV to **fall** of 2015 (of course that would make it a 2016 model). That's square head-to-head with the new Volt which had its spyshots last month. The Spyshots for the Gen IV had been out over a year.

I give it to Toyota keeping things in the DL....

I wonder if a car manufacturer would actually release a car before announcement. That would be an entire other strategy!
