Hi Everyone! My 2005 Prius just got me home from work. No sulfur smell. No dashboard lights. No worries.

But boyfriend's truck had flat tire, and he works 3rd shift at Universal Studios in Orlando tonight. So he comes back in, and gets my Prius keys. He walks over to the car to get into it, and I notice the rear lights did not flash with the key fob unlock. So we talk about the rescue key in the fob, and how to lock the car. But he get into the car, and says what is that awful smell? I had bought a new lemon air freshener, so I assumed he meant that. LOL I tell him I don't know. But there is no electric juice. No car start. I get into the car. Rotten eggs. No dash lights except a very dim "check engine" light. I can only lock the driver's door. All the other doors are unlocked. But the Hatch will not unlock. So hopefully, it is just the 12v battery. We'll have to climb thru the back seat to the hatch area, both of us kinda chunky...LOL. I hope that is all it is.

Check your 12v connections on that battery. That smell sounds to me like a short. I would have it diagnosed at the dealership ASAP. ( before you have a fire)

( just my opinion, your mileage may vary)

Dead battery and rotten egg smell sounds familiar. Happened to our friend's Prius. I checked the battery and it was ZERO volts! She got a AAA jump, drove home and had the dealer replace the 12v battery the next day. No problems since.

You didn't by any chance have the vent blocked in the back seat did you? My wife accidentally threw a light jacket in the back seat when we started a trip. After about 2 hours the batteries overheated and I got the same smell. Just asking.

This is the third time I'm seeing on PC that dead battery gives sulfur smell. You don't hear about regular cars doing that. Because of the cabin battery?

It's just because with the Prius you can have a 12V battery that's just about totally flogged, and still (sort of) get by. People have reported batteries reading as low as 10.x volts (under ignition on test) and still managing to start and drive their Prius somewhat normally.

With a convention car that requires the 12V battery to crank the engine, it would be long gone well before something like this could happen.

no, your smell is coming from the hybrid battery vent tubes. you can buy the correct size silicon tubing on ebay for $15. to replace them.

Bisco, I checked on ebay and I came across different types of silicone tubing; Food grade, high temp... Would you be able to provide me with a link to the correct type?

I wonder if this will void the battery warranty by messing with it. I don't think Toyota likes people opening the case

If it's still under warranty maybe there's a case to make a claim. From what I've read here toyota's denying there's anything wrong tho.

    Which stinks. :ROFLMAO:
