Perhaps a silly question, but since I've not been able to identify this or come up with search terms that yield any informative results, here or on the net in general, I will ask:
What is this tray for in the passenger side of my sub-floor cargo area?

It came empty. For a while I got the idea that the left space was for the plug-in cable but it's the wrong shape and dimensions. The driver's side came with an emergency tire patching system in lieu of a spare, but I've not been able to figure out whether something is missing or what this was specifically designed for. (Cursory glance through the included manuals|guides don't suggest anything is missing, yet the cavities seem very specifically shaped...)

One of those spots looks about right for a tire plug kit.

All the GenIIIs have that tray and it was never identified as to what may go in there. Maybe it's something in Japan.

I'm amazed at the ample amount of storage areas throughout my Prius. Unfortunately, my dad was a pack-rat, which influenced me towards discarding and not keeping things. I can only imagine the amount of rattling noises one will have to endure from all the stored stuff while driving.

Who uses/needs all of the available storage? Nevertheless, it would be interesting to see/hear from those that do.

That's the main reason I didn't get a Prius v, lowercase v, for the 'station wagon' Prius. The PIP has more than enough room.

I have a 2014 PIP advanced, nothing came in it. It's just space for your use with the divider for rigidity. I use 12 volt connecting cable permanently attached to the battery terminals that plugs into my maintainer, and I snaked the wire up into tray and lay the extra cable wound up in the tray for easy access.

Mine came empty too. I cut some rubber sheet to fit inside to prevent rattling and sliding of items. Now, I keep my bits and odds there (a padlock for the charging cable, ID card for public charging stations, etc.).

The black part is where one end of your cover fits if you remove it from its normal position to store it. My tire gauge + hose fits perfectly in the largest section.

I tried sticking the cover bar in, but then the rigid flap portion didn't quite fit anywhere. (Of course, I also had stuff in that pocket now..)

Obviously it was designed to hold something very specific. We're all dying to know what it might have been. My guess would be something to do with tire repair.

Perhaps there's a warehouse full of these trays somewhere, manufactured before the accessories had been finalized.
