Hybrid Battery Replacement

We can't help you with Toyota - but Greentec Auto can give you a more reasonable replacement battery. Call Tim Razumovsky - tell him Brenda told you to call. You can do it yourself or have them install for a very low price. They have several options - all of them cheaper than what you were just told and a longer warranty.
You'll find them on the web. We have had them install 3 batteries for 3 different family Prius'.

 

I think the op ended up with a pretty good deal, too bad he had to work so hard to get it. Now from another perspective, my daughter just had to replace the transmission in her 06 Yukon XL, it has 60,000 miles and she got no help from GM, but found that $4000 was the best price she could get for a new transmission installed, so your battery replacement seems by comparison pretty cheap and you saved a lot of money on gas to boot. Sometimes looking at the bigger picture helps.

 

I cannot imagine anybody in my family owning a Yukon* LOL. The bigger picture is probably that an owner of any Toyota car that had a transmission die at 60k miles would be screaming blood murder.

The battery/inverter repair costs of the Prius do match up pretty favorably with transmission repair costs in conventional cars. I wonder though about buying new -- I thought a rebuilt transmission was the way to go ?
Does you daughter expect another transmission failure 60k miles down the road ?

*Was your daughter told that her car was made by that other, now extinct GM ? That she should buy a NEW GM, which is so much better and supported by brilliant customer service ?

This is true, but don't forget that the Prius transaxle is another potential point of failure. Although the failure rate is probably lower than that experienced by many domestic auto transmissions, when it does fail the only reasonable repair is to install a used unit since a new transaxle costs ~$3,500 MSRP, prior to adding dealer labor costs to the bill. So a dealer-installed new transaxle could easily cost close to $6K depending upon hourly labor rates.

I hate to admit that I've had the very same nightmare.

Again 2006 Prius, bought used 2.5 years ago, 90+k miles, serviced at the main dealers up to 60k miles - hybrid and auxiliary battery had to be replaced without as much as a cent from Toyota.

The dealer approached Toyota Ireland, I approached them directly, I approached the country warranty manager through someone high up on the company and no way would they even entertain the request, no assistance offered.

It's not the Toyota cars that have become unreliable but the the company itself I think.

Ended up getting a new Toyota battery the main dealers as we don't have any other option in this is small island where we are.

I just hope the new battery lasts a long time but spending as much money on an 8 year old car just didn't seem right though and it's going to song for a very long time.

But one thing I just say is that the car does drive a lot better with the new battery.

Toyota Hybrid Programme for Europe should have covered your HV battery issue...
10 years warranty...

 

Can you please point me to any documentation on that. I think in the Uk the hybrid system is covered for 5 years and the hybrid battery specifically covered for 8 years. In Ireland apparently it's only 5 years for both those things.

But in 2006 the warranty was 8 years as per the warranty booklet in my car.

I'm really interested to see if I can recover the costs anyhow.......

Valid if tests have been performed within OEM shops. If not official assisted, I´m afraid they (Toyota) might step away.

 

Thanks for the great info. Of course this doesn't change my situation but I think this should be made a sticky with warnings to all Prius owners who're about to end their warranty periods to get into this scheme before the warranty ends. This might have same many of us a fortune.

I was told by the dealer that the hybrid battery has a Mandatory warranty of 150k miles.. I was told to bring mine back just before then and have it replaced. Something too look at.
