whats the difference between a 2005-2008 prius, im reading the brochure for those models and I cant identify what the new features are in the later models between 2005 and 2008

are there any benefits of buy later models lets say an 08 over a 05?

There are some difference in the 2004-2005 models. Cosmetically on the outside, the front end and rear end is different. Also I believe there is no backup camera on the 2004-2005, but I could be wrong.

The 2006-2009 exterior is the same. However the packages on those years differ. A package 2 from 2006 has different equipment than a package 2 from 2007.

I think motortrend has a good list of all the options/packages from different years. The changes are very minor, some won't notice it.

As already mentioned, there are differences. The 2004-2009 are all the "GenII" or "Generation 2". Toyota almost always does mid-model refreshes which happened for the 2006 MY. That means the 2004-2005 look the same, and the 2006-2009 look the same. The packages are listed below. There are subtle refresh differences. Personally I think the 2004-2005 had an old arcade game type display and a hard plastic interior. The 2006 with backup camera has a higher resolution screen which looks fantastic. It also has textured plastic interior panels which make it look nicer. The hybrid badges were introduced on the sides, there is a fake strip of LEDs in the headlights that don't illuminate but does break up the big reflector. The 2004-2005 models had more aggressive traction control than the 2006 which has more aggressive traction control than the 2007-2009 models. The 2004-2005 and 2006 models had waterpump recalls (free dealership replacement) even though they were different parts. Just little things.

If I was buying another GenII Prius, I would look in the 2006-2009 range that had full 3-door SKS and backup camera.

Please be aware there are some innacuracies on the above charts referring to '04 options. No need to worry about coming across one with only a cassette player. 6 Speaker CD was standard. There are also front/rear curtain air bags, auto dim rear view mirror and blue tooth...at least on package #9...

Ultimately, I would consider condition for your money be the determining factor. I would be inclined to choose an '05 with 80k and a known history of proper care/maintenance vs. something newer with which may not be as in good condition...

Honestly, unless there's reason to believe that it's been replaced, I'd go for the later model year car to get the younger traction battery.

The batteries seem to age more from time than from miles.

I would also go with the advice of those here who know...my brain is still wired to years of ICE cars. I am a member of many automotive forum, and am more impressed with the knowledge and contributions of members of PC than any other site. Not to mention the respect among members. Due to the uniquity of these cars, I cannot imagine a better resource for other owners;) As I learn more, I hope contribute meaningful posts...900 miles a week on an '04 ought to be an interesting ownership;)
