Miles on OEM tires before replacement?

I've owned my truck since 2004 and changed out one pair (before I knew better) 4 or 5 years ago. The other original pair is still going with about 72k on them.

 

In a mild climate like Vancouver you should get more that 5 years before cracking sets in.

A car that gets parked in the sun all day in Phoenix will experience cracked, hardened tires long before the same tires on a car in a mild climate will crack.

 

Our's is garaged. First day of spring coming up, everbody's wearing coats and packing umbrellas today.

Yokoahama S33s currently with 39k on them. rotated every 5k. I believe last reading was 5/32. Considering replacement before Northern Indiana winter rolls around we'll see where they are at then.

 

Our new 2014 Prius-4 has the OEM Bridgestone Ecopia EP20 tires. So, I, too, am wondering: (a) *how long* will they typically last (milage) and (b) do they *really* help the fuel economy?

 

I have 40k on Yokohama Avid. I live in NY.

I had continental dws on rear wheel drive car and it did great in bad weather that is why on planning to get a set around 45k or so

 

I've got a set in our garage right now. They went on a Honda Civic Hybrid at 86000 km, and the car's currently around 160000 km. So around 74000 km. But around 25% of that distance they were swapped out for snows, so say 55000 km.

Tread depth now is around 5/32" remaining, at the mid-width of the tread. But some of the inner edges of tread are down to around 4/32", due to the car's negative camber on the rear suspension I think.

These tires could go another season through to fall, but we're going to replace them this spring. Getting the same. The new ones are actually in transit right now.

Here's a snap. The outside of the tire is at the top, tread depth diminishes going from outside to inside. The wear bars are visible, but not joining up yet. The tread does look pretty knackered though, lol.

 

Make sure you get a four wheel alignment along with those new tires.

 

^ In practice there's not much you can change, besides front toe, without swapping components or adding shims.

The Civic Hybrid's negative rear camber is by design. There's actually a service bulletin to change one component of the rear suspension, and they suggest to only do the swap if there's excessive or uneven tire wear. I don't think there's a problem with ours: near the end of their tread life the tires are a bit more worn at the edges than the middle, and the wear is even in longitudinal direction. In all our Honda years I've always found the tread depth a little lower at inside edge, again, due to rear neg camber.

 

Yes. They do help with fuel economy. Slap on a set of non-LRR tires or god forbid a set of performance tires and watch your fuel economy plummet!

 

57,500 miles on original tires 2012 Prius

 

I got rid of my OEM's at 44k and replaced them with Michelin Defenders. I now have 60k and they are like new.

 

I asked these questions (above) because the Bridgestone Ecopia EP20's on our 2014 Prius are our *FIRST* encounter with LRR tyres. Both of our older Pontiac Vibes (2004 & 2009) came equipped with 'all-season' Goodyear Eagle RS-A tyres which lasted a LONG time. The OEM-tyres on our defunct 2011 LTZ Cruze didn't last 30K-miles before "chunking" occurred...on ALL four tyres!

 

My OEM lasted about 41.000 miles before I replaced with Michellin all season. These tires will last if you rotate them every 10,000-18,000 based on my experienced.

 

My 2006 had a few sets, the 2012 OEM tires lasted until 47K when I replaced them with Good year assurance comfortracks. I knew the fuel savers would be closer to the OEM tires but the ride and noise was worth the 2mpg I gave up two months before it met its untimely demise, and almost mine.

the 2014 has the Yoke's on it I run mine at 42 front and 44 rear. I drive around 650 miles a week with 80% of that being highway at 65mph posted limits. the tread rating on these are a bit less than the fuel saver (320 and 380 from what I've seen) the tread rating on the oem tires on the 2006 stated it as being 400. I just had the first 5K service completed so I'd have to say based on the Gen III around 45-50K you can count on needing them if you drive in snow at all, in a non snow area heat may change that but I couldn’t say.

I forgot to mention why I changed to the Goodyear assurance tire on the last two cars.

Since I drive a lot of miles and these tires go great in all weather and have a tread life of 600 from the Wal-Mart grade tire I found that I got more than 68K from a set without any traction loss in the winter. The car that was wrecked (2012) had the newer high grade comfore-track tires, I didn’t have the car long enough to see how long they would last but they were rated well.

I had comfor tred touring on my 2005 Prius 55,000 miles on tires.
Really liked them.

 

I just had my 40k service at the dealer and they marked all 4 tires at 6/32. These tires are my second encounter with LRR. The first was whatever OEM was installed on my sisters 2005 Prius. They were awful. They loud, rough riding, and delivered poor grip. I am quite pleased with these EP20's. They are easily the best OEM tires I've come across. They are still louder and rougher riding than regular tires but they are more subdued. And handling has improved by a lot but some of that could also be differences from Gen 2 to Gen 3. There's no way for me to tell. I drive 90% freeway and so far, these tires are on track to last 100k miles.
