Florida PHEV-200 10KW UPGRADE

    Hi Pat,

    Very good to hear that it all worked out fine :). Your cells are pretty good balanced! Nice ;).
    Due to you post I also decided to upgrade to the new 4 bank battery pack solution of Plug-In Supply and ordered from Robb this upgrade pack. It feels much saver and easier to handle at a service. Hope it will arrive in time to install my GEN 3 Prius Plug-In Supply pack before my wife will give birth to our first baby this June.

    Received the new rear CAN board from Robb at PIS... Nice clean design all inputs/outputs on one side. Tested it out on a trip yesterday and got close to 25 miles some at over 50mph before the front screen went from green to blue. That is an improvement... Still don't have to use gas around town.:) .

    The issue that I have been having with false vbs/vsc minor alarms on the dash have still not been resolved so certainly the rear CAN board has been exonerated.

    Ran a new signal cable between the front and rear CAN units with three turns of the cable through a large ferrite core at the front CAN board end. This is a Ham Radio fix for removing stray RF from the shield of Co-Ax cable.

    Did a 46 mile round trip at 100 mpg from Home to Vanderbilt Beach in Naples and back. 25 miles was all green display from the big pack and the rest was blue. Average was 99.9 mpg for the entire round trip and entirely in PHEV mode. That 'aint too shabby.

    Oh.. false alarms all gone away.. Ferrite choke suppression is working. The new cable alone did not fix the problem.

    Last week I also got my new Front and Rear controller from Plug-In Supply. It's looking real good. The electronics is nicely placed and the front controller is now also PIS own branded. This front controller is programmed for my GEN 3 Prius. Also ordered today from Robb a Battery upgrade pack for my 10 kW pack. As soon as I got that I will install everything in our car.

    That's Great Alexander.. I am really pleased with the service from P-I-S .. The upgrade went just great and I have tested the car around Fort Myers enough now to be able to say it seems to be doing all I expect of it. I did have to use a large Ferrite choke at the front CAN board end to remove the spikes that were giving me false abs/vsc alarms. That problem had plagued me for almost a year now. One thing that some people don't understand about this particular location is that Fort Myers, Florida is only about 130 miles from the northern edge of the Tropic of Cancer and as such, if the car is not garaged (mine is not) then the daytime heat is so intense that even with the windows open, the charger heat sensors trip and cut the charger off. That means without extensive forced air cooling, opportunity charging during daytime hours is not an option.

    Hi Pat.
    Thanks for the advice. I will use a Ferrite Choke. I assume that I need to put it around the UTP cable that connects the front and rear controller. I also will mount an extra ventilator on the charger, just to be sure that it will cool enough. Even if here in the Netherlands the temperature is normally not so high. Also the street location of where the public charge pole will be placed in my street is mostly in the shadow of trees. So I don't expect problems with that.

    Mine is now ready for a public charge pole. I have just drilled the hole in de side of my Prius. And mounted a Ratio Electric connector on the car. The side panel of the car is from aluminum. I have reinforced this backside with waterproof multiplex wood on the inside. See pictures.

    "Gas" is $8.32 a gallon here, I don't need to do any more maths than that!!

    Had a major crash on the pc and lost most of my data :( . Finally able to check back in to this board. Had another two of the old original cells go short on me and sent away for more of the refurbished ones from ElitePowerSolutions in Tempe Arizona. This will be the third Refurbished set that I have purchased from them. They are good and I haven't had any of them fail yet. Sure is a boon having the PIS update though. Finally able to handle cell replacements by myself.

    The new cells arrived today (4/15/2014) and I installed them. Everything seems to be back to normal now.. I am really surprised that 4 had failed and that is the reason that it has taken so long to fix the problem. In total, Twelve refurbished cells were purchased since 2012 and all twelve failed. I am hoping that these new ones will last. I am not confident however since we are coming up to Summer temperatures. I just completed 36 miles on a partial charge with PHEV milage 84mpg., I have however lost confidence in the reliability of the cells that I'm using and will quit using EV/PHEV as soon as I am able. This has been a very expensive ride. It has however been very interesting and I plan on buying another Prius insurance rebuild from Steve. If you know of anyone who would like a very nice trouble free 2006 GenII Prius rebuilt by Steve complete with a PIS 10kw supply, please let me know I want to get as close as possible to $10,500. Pat
