Relax and drive the car. If you can let it warm-up for a minute, that is good, but there are very few operating modes that have any known bad things. Slower is always better but don't make a fetish of it. Just look for slower traffic and follow at a safe distance. I used cruse control all the time and it makes for a pleasant drive.

Well, I can do either because there is a long road near me that has 35 MPH speed limit. I find that once up to speed, I can drive that road either totally on the EV or slightly above with the ICE being used. So I'm not sure which is better on mileage.

Slower is always better BUT we drive to get somewhere. So good, fast, cheap, pick two. <GRINS>

You have a strange way of not really answering the question...

Thanks for posting this. I recently upgraded from a II to a III and was experiencing a significant difference in MPG (i.e. with the new III). After following your recommendations I'm back to 48mpg+

    Just wanted to say thanks.

Just picked up a 2012 Prius in Canada here. When test drove the car today I notice the dashboard display different than the YouTube. Is that just a menu display setting or this video is only applicable to 2010 vehicle?

The 2010 is a bit different than a 2012 Prius...if that's what you mean. Might need to clarify your question more please.

As a new Prius owner and given that this is the best video and explanation I have seen of the myriads on the subject, I thought it deserved a bump. Even though it's a 3+ year old thread.

Super helpful video. First 100 miles on my new-to-me Prius, and managed 59.5MPG with mostly highway driving.

Generally, it is best to avoid electric drive modes and instead use the ICE.

That said, the ICE is least efficient at the lowest loads, and most efficient at higher loads.

I watched this video before I even got my Prius and I'm very grateful for the excellent information! You made it so clear and easy to put into practice. I have been commuting to and from work (50 miles round trip) for the past two weeks at an average of 62 mpg! Love it.

Maybe we should make this video/link a sticky in the newbie introduction forum, along with the fuel economy subsection of the various trims. While this video is clearly meant for the gen 3 prius, a lot of the techniques discussed here can also be useful for the other trims and perhaps the older gen priuses as well. I didn't even realize this video existed when I first visited priuschat, and I think I first saw this video from someone linking it in a post.

I've made good gains in MPG by scanning ahead of car in front of me, scanning adjacent lanes, left, right to see flow and look for slowing ahead. use the brakes less and get higher MPG.

Just got 534.8mi / 9.337 = 57.3 MPG @ 25 MPH mostly freeway commute, heavy Bay Area traffic.
