Argh, I'd love to be able to replace the navigation/entertainment system on my 2007 with a CarPlay unit. Anyone know if anything is in the works, or if it would be possible to use the existing screen?
the nav system is separate from the audio system....I just took out my JBL Premium unit and the nav is still there....
Strike One: I have not heard that Car Play is in the works for ANY Toyota. Strike Two: I have not heard of any existing car getting CarPlay, just new models. Strike Three: Toyota is not still making the Gen 2 Prius. While I would be interested in being wrong, (GM did eventually offer OnStar for other cars) I can't see this happening. Update: aftermarket Carplay units run $500 and up, Aftermarket CarPlay console coming this fall, costs between $500 and $700 | Ars Technica
I am speaking of aftermarket products, like the ones used to defeat the moronic nanny mode preventing users from accessing basic functions on the screen while driving. I am not sure, but I assume that the Prius navigation system is built on some version of the QNX platform, which has been around for about 30 years. CarPlay is compatible with QNX. So, it is possible that at least some of its functions can be integrated by aftermarket providers. Also, since some of the major manufacturers have had access to CarPlay for a while in order to develop products, it is not unlikely that third-party vendors may also have had access and thus be close to releasing products.
thanks for clarifying. i think the existing screen should be fine and we should be seeing something by this spring.
I would be elated to discover that some third party vendor / developer had developed a "CarPlay" upgrade for our Gen IIs. I would happily upgrade and lift the "Old Reliable" ahead a decade in infotainment / communications control from onboard systems. I do hope someone does develop something for the Prius II. The earliest examples might be getting on for ten year old, but believe me, this vehicle was built to ride, and ride and ride. It's like a Boeing B52 - they just keep rolling out upgrades, and the plane just keeps flying. Or....the Space Shuttle - look for how long THAT flew. Again, the later models got "Glass Cockpit" upgrades, and it just kept going.....(Till they scrapped it . ) iPad ? HD
CarPlay Integration May Be Possible in Older Vehicles, Mercedes-Benz Working on Aftermarket Solution So, it sounds like at least some aftermarket manufacturers are preparing solutions. Hope it comes to our Prius as well (I drive cars until they die WiFi is what I would hope for.
Not sure if this is the same issue but I have a 2012 Prius without the Nav package. My iPhone was working fine as a phone and music player. After the IOS 7.1 update that is supposed to fix CarPlay, my phone doesn't work well as an audio player. When I switch to blue tooth instead of giving me a list of music as before it now gives me an empty screen with no browse. I have to load and start the music from my phone and then it works as before. Does Toyota ever upgrade software on their vehicles?
Duane, you have a slightly better chance as Toyota still makes your model. This thread is about the fantasy that Toyota would upgrade an old model. I would look in Gen 3 forums for hints for your car.
I think you are misunderstanding my question above. I do not expect Toyota to do anything for my out of warranty 2006 Prius entertainment/navigation unit. I was asking was if there is an aftermarket add-on being worked on, which will allow CarPlay to function with the existing head unit. Similar to the HD Radio aftermarket add-on, or the add-ons which allow bypassing the nanny lock Toyota uses on its cars to prevent us from being able to change destination while moving. CarPlay is compatible with QNX. The Prius entertainment/navigation system runs on QNX, as far I as can tell. It looks like Mercedes is working with third parties to provide a solution, it is not impossible that someone is working on a Toyota solution - there are a lot of Toyotas around.
