30,000 mile service - necessary or not?

    I was quoted $300.00 plus for the 30k mi service. It includes the following items that I question the importance of:
    Engine oil system flush (this is in addition to the regular oil changes)
    Charging system test and battery service including anti-corr pads
    Lubricate chassis
    Fuel system service, includes Clean Throttle Body top off under hood fluids
    The rest is just inspection related, tire rotation, and oil change. I changed the cabin filter myself. I am at 38k with oil changes, tire rotations, and one cabin filter change thus far. Just hate to give money away for unnecessary service expenses if they are not worthwhile!

    These items sound like useless crap to me.... I'd skip them. Go for whatever service is outlined in your manual... starts on pg. 37 here:

    One of the few additional services I plan to do on my car every 30k miles will be changing the trans fluid.

    One thing that bothers me: if they're forever pushing these extras, maybe shop around if there's another dealership not too far away. With that kind of attitude, they may be missing vital maintenance, and/or not be the best guys to have in your corner in event of a warranty issue.

    The whole service is BS.

    So easy to work on the car I did the service my self.

    Which included changing the WS trans axle fluid.

    Ask them what chassis point they lube?

    You can lube the hinges your self which is all you can lube.

    Engine oil system flush: There is no "system" to flush. Oil and filter change.

    Charging system test and battery service: You can load test the 12v battery, and look at the traction battery data on a scan tool. The batteries are maintenance free, and don't require, nor can you do, any kind of "service." Anti-corr pads only need to be changed on poor quality batteries that leak around the terminals. However, if the battery s leaking, there's really no reason to change the pads, you should be changing the battery.

    Fuel system and throttle body service: Absolutely ridiculous. Modern fuel systems don't' require service. More problems arise from changing fuel filters, than with just leaving them alone. If a filter requires changing, you have a bigger problem; not that they mention changing the filter. Way too early to need the throttle body cleaned. Topping off of fluids is a no-no in our trade. Why? Where did the fluid go? It didn't evaporate. Brake fluid low level is an indication of worn brakes, and you need to look at things other than just topping off the fluid. Ditto coolant, PS fluid, etc. A competent tech will never just "top it off."

    Lubricate chassis: LOL. I wonder what they're pumping grease into? I haven't seen a grease fitting on a non-off road Toyota in over 20 years.


    Find another dealer. In fact, find in independent that specializes in Toyota and hybrids.

    FWIW, this has become a plague because cars are becoming so reliable, that the dealer just isn't making money off of repairs anymore. We call it wallet flushing.

    The dealer that I bought my Prius from was always ripping me off for service so I recently changed dealers. I went to their service department this morning and asked them to change the inserts on all 3 wiper blades. I was told to go to the parts department and purchase the inserts and return. I returned with the inserts which cost $23.72. They replaced the inserts free. A fantastic service department. When I buy another new car I will make every effort to buy it from this dealer because of their great service department that is so fantastic and does not rip me off. If you are getting ripped off by your dealer service department, make a change, you may be glad you did. I sure am.

    Never did anything like that, going on 82k. sounds like a ripoff
