Any ideas on a good meat substitute for sandwiches?

It's fantastic for a hangover. If you're not a major fan, I can only assume that you have lived a virtuous life.

I had a large Doner Kebab and chips earlier, is that counted as virtuous? Lol (takeout Thursday!)

Excellent! We're back onto topic. A British or Irish doner kebab is unquestionably a substitute for meat.

I was quite shocked when I moved to Australia and discovered that doner kebabs can actually be delicious things made of real meat that you eat when you're sober.

Ah. So it's the same in America as it is in Britain, then, I assume.

Honestly, in Australia they're actually nice. It's good meat, and nice vegetables, and good bread.

In Britain, you can't eat one when you're just too drunk to drive: you have to be so drunk that saying "doner kebab" is a challenge. If you can remember your name, you shouldn't eat one. They really are quite disgusting.

But in Australia, they're a joy. And the same shops usually sell gozleme, which is one of life's great pleasures, and which is also very wholesome. And at our local shop, the owner's mum makes beautiful baklava, which, while guaranteed to lead to the instant onset of type II diabetes, are very nice and are made from good, natural ingredients.

Last year I had a 1 inch square of baklava... I am diabetic... that's all I could have.

Is it just fats you are out to cut?

The reason I ask is weight reduction or other goals would suggest another approach.

Indeed. Chicken breast or tuna are going to be lower in fat than a lot of non-meat alternatives.

Honestly, even as a non-diabetic, I can't manage much more baklava than that. It's nice, but it's just so loaded with, well, pretty much everything that much more than a square inch will make me feel sick.

    Bob,

Seeing this is what motivated this thread

It's asserting meat products cause plaque - avoiding them gets rid of them.

    Hope that helps.

Ok. Just I'm not so sure diet abstinence of a single food makes more sense than mixing foods we individually like in more modest quantities and using feedback monitoring. If there were a self-administered test for plaque fats, something that gives credible metrics, one could tell to what extent meat, fish, or dairy is leading to a problem. But we've had so many advocates for prohibitions with so few feedback systems . . . well that is why I asked.

Truth be told, I have more skepticism about the bread than the meat. When I have monitored my blood sugar, I can see the effects of carbohydrates and sugars. But I found canned fish, beans, and non-carb veggies barely move the needle.

I'm not eating a lot of meats because their fats can move the needle but canned fish has such high amounts of D and B complexes, their fats are a small price to pay.

Good luck and live long enough to pour a fine Irish whiskey on my grave . . . after you filter it.
