Only heard it yesterday as was sunny so had window down. Coming from passenger side (GB car) like a clicking sound if you have something in your spokes. Gets worse from 35mph and at 45 pretty loud. Cant see anything loose under car or in the wheels. Will check oil tomorrow but doesnt sound like it coming from engine. Any ideas its at 140k so im thinking wheel bearing or something to do with suspension etc.
Does the repetition rate change strictly with vehicle speed? That would imply something related to the axle rather than the engine. If it is a bearing, it should change its tune with turning sharply left or right. If it is not just road debris caught underneath somewhere, I would think a clicking is more likely due to one of the CV joints. P.S. Glad to hear you had a sunny day there. Not the norm lately.
Sometimes, a very small rock might get stuck in a disc caliper and bump up against the rotor to cause that noise.
Went out again this morning to get some oil, clicking still present start to hear it about 20mph and it increases rate with speed and at about 45mph its pretty constant. silly to explain but it sounds like a ping pong ball that sort of click sound. Seems to be from front left wheel area. No stones caught between disk that I can see and doesn't disappear with braking only slowing down to below 15mph. On turning right it seems very slightly less constant and turning left makes it very slightly more pronounced. I have a video but you will need to turn your speakers up to hear it due to wind noise if it would help I can upload it. Going to drop it into local mechanic in next hour so will hopefully get to the bottom of it. Driving me nuts
Was a small rock stuck in the tread and one stuck in disc my exhaust is badly blown though so need a full new exhaust as you cant just get a middle bit as its rusted too badly for welding as well. Was low on oil as well total cost £0 so far Thanks for all the suggestions and quick responses folks much appreciated.
Dave you will need to sit down before seeing the price of a complete exhaust. An aftermarket front end is £360, and rear silencer £50 + fitting. The OEM one is well over a grand I believe. A friend of mine once had a workmate that was always playing jokes on people. As revenge the other guys placed small black cable tie on his drive shaft and trimmed it long enough to just flick the floor pan every time it rotated. It took him about a month to find it, nearly drove him mad.
Uart, with friends like that... I am wondering why the exhaust would be so far gone. This is first time on PC that I have read of this issue, so it is not typical for a Prius. Salt on the roads?
