I don't know anything about the new 6 litre V8 Power Stroke used in the Ford's. They did have a software problem that caused stalling, that has been fixed. From what I have heard, they are too new to have established reliability records.

It's hard to go wrong with the Cummins B5.9 inline 6 turbodiesel. The motor has a long and well established service history, and with reasonable care will outlast the truck body and frame.

Remember that like any "real" HD diesel motor, it won't break in unless "worked." Don't baby it. Run it at the rated tow rating from day one. The few around here I've seen burning oil were "daily drivers" by guys who wanted to look cool. Always drove empty and the motor was effectively ruined by it.

If you live in a climate that can get cold, make sure you run the proper winter oil. Some guys around here run Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 year round, but it should only be used down to -22 F. A synthetic HD diesel oil 0W-30 can be used down to -40. Esso XD-3 0W-30 is popular around here, I use it in my tractor at the hobby farm in winter.

The H1 is available with a 6.5 litre V8 diesel engine. The H2 and H3 are petrol only.

Well, it wouldn't be a daily driver, but I also doubt I could always drive it "loaded". How big of a concern is this. Now you got me worrying.

Is the Cummins diesel pretty much a Dodge thing?

    I have a 1995 F350 4x4 with a 460 V8.
I don't drive it much because of poor gas millage (12mpg).
It has been trouble free exept for a engine shutdown once.
I found out when I installed a dump modification to the stock bed, I should have rerouted the overdrive wire and didn't.
So my only problem was self inflicted.
I do wish I got the Power Stroke Diesel

I have to admit I'm flattered if I got you "worrying." Seriously, nothing to worry about. With the Dodge Cummins B5.9, I looked into it some more and found this:

So don't be afraid to tow that 5th wheel as soon as you get the truck. It will probably be good for the motor. It would probably be wise to change the transmission fluid and rear axle gear oil after the first 600-1,000 miles of towing.

You're "handy" with routine maintenance, right? It's a good way to keep equipment in proper shape, and you keep on top of things. My folks had a heavy construction company when I was a kid, so I naturally had to learn things like that.

Although Dodge appears to have a market segment exclusive with the Cummins B5.9, that motor is actually used in a lot of medium duty commerical applications. It's proven.

Not interested in anything that looks like a four door (crew cab???) Remember, I am looking used, 4-8 yrs old. I do not think I am familiar enough with diesels to go bio diesel. Do biodiesels suffer on the power side?

we have 32 Power Strokes in our fleet of vans at work and some are approching 400,000 km's and no failures so far Lot's of tranny failures but no engines. We sell equipement with Cummins in them and so far the main problem has been electrical and the continuing pan rail leak the Cummins seems to ignore. We've sold a couple of million dollars worth of stuff with Cummins in it. Both the little ones and the big ones. I'd say your fine with either, what ever costs are in line with what you can afford with low mileage on the unit and no collision damage history. If your spending any kind of biggish dollars and your not a mechanic take it and have it inspected.

Oh. I'd lean towards the Dodge truck with the Cummins. As Frank mentioned, have a mechanic thoroughly check it over. Breakdowns are pricey with a diesel motor.

As far as biodiesel, check with the maker, most don't approve biodiesel.

Mainly what are you going to use it for, work or play

if you use it as a work truck its gonna smell like sweat & stuff

If your gonna haul a 5th wheel your going to want a diesel check to see if the truck can run on RED diesel, this is what they have been sending to the gas stations since they lifted the restrictions Fords have a hard time with it and it can become costly.. I would look towards a 3500 or a F450 super duty.. with turbo

Now if you just gotta have it all, and youve just hit the powerball!!
this is the heavy duty Chevy C550

Good luck in your endevors! B)

Aaah, the big Nissan Titan with the V8. You probably will regret a diesel if you have a Prius.

I think I found the truck I want up in Maumee (near Toledo, OH). Ford F-350 w/ 7.3 litre Turbo Diesel. 4WD, standard cab, 8'bed

I am going up tomorrow to see it and, if I buy it, I will go BACK up on Saturday w/ my daughter to get it.

THEN, I will take it to [you] to get an opinion.

Of course, why do I need my daughter, I can just stick the Prius in the bed.

Well, I got it. Went up Saturday and bought my truck. Ford F-350 7.3 litre Powerstroke Turbo Diesel 4WD.

In the first 200 miles (mostly the highway trip back at 70mph) I got 16.5 mpg. I am pretty pleased.

Oh, and %#@%$&*%$ I got a present up there. Someone opened their door into the side of my Prius and left a mark the size of a nickel.
