Hi All, I currently own a 2004 Prius. I change the wheels and tires to snow tires in the winter. I am thinking about getting a new Prius: either a four, five, or a plugin advanced. Can I get snow tires for these models?
Yes, no problem using winter tires on the Gen III Prius and PIP. Lots of us have them. If you're actually considering the PIP- head over to the Plug-In forum and start reading up...
We're using this combo, works well: snow tire: Michelin X-Ice 195/65R15 Corolla steel rim, part no: 42611-02471-SW (2006+ model year?) steel rim lug nuts: 90942-01007
^ Yeah, that might look a bit better. I've toyed with getting Corolla wheel covers, but so far: (Notice the extremely bare road. I sometimes wonder..., guess it's pretty much time to take them off, after another near snowless winter.)
I'm currently using snow tires/rims bought for a Gen 3 on my Gen 2. Blizzak WS70 and they have worked out well this winter. There's not enough difference between 15" stock sizes on these to make the speedometer error significant - actually my error is less with the 195/65 15 tires. All that to say the opposite would be true and your old snows would likely work w/o issue on the new car.
That's good news since I was wondering what I would do with my current (Hakkapeliitta 185/65R15 RSi tires). Since you think they would work. I'll keep them and give them try. Thanks to everyone who responded.
On previous vehicles I've owned, I've used Continental ContiWinterContacts and Bridgestone Blizzaks, and finally on the Prius the Michelin X-Ice's. I don't know if it's just the Prius or what, but the Prius + X-Ice combo is the worst driving car in the snow and ice I've ever been behind the wheel of! Does anyone else feel the same way? I have lots of tread left and I'm seriously thinking about ditching them and forking out the cash and trying something different, I they're so bad. Would love to hear from people who have had multiple sets of different brand winter tires for comparison.
