You confuse me. Why are you on the Prius forums?

The only reason I got rid of my '10 Prius and got a '13 PiP is because I needed the carpool access in CA. Otherwise, I'd have kept the '10 and probably run it to the ground.

I'm sure he didn't mean that in a literal sense, which I'm guessing you were aware as well...

It depends on what your objective is.

    Are you wanting to:
    1. Deprive BigOil of as much revenue as you can, so that they can't at least use your $'s to fund their sabotage of all attempts by humanity to stop burning their oil and save the planet from frying?
    2. Hedge your bets that an oil shock is just round the corner?
    3. Get more than 60 miles in EV only mode and never have range anxiety?
    4. Use your own solar generated electricity to recharge your Plug-in battery?

If 'yes' is the answer to all these and you are happy with the Prius you have, why not just convert that to plug-in?

Yea that's what I mean. I've been on the forums for only a few months but he's posted that he does't own a Prius and doesn't want a Prius (I think, my bad if I'm misremembering his posts). Yet he posts here pretty regularly. Hah. Just odd to me. That's why I asked him.

Apologies for the confusion. I never intend to "dis" others, but sometimes my direct nature and lack of ;) gives that impression.

You're correct that I don't own a Prius, but I'm in the market for one. I usually browse the forums before committing on a car, that way I can confirm my decision and reduce surprises. I believe the Prius is one of the most utilitarian vehicles with excellent fuel economy and reliability. It's perfect for my plan of road trips and occasionally sleeping in the back. Finding a good deal on the Prius seems especially difficult, since the ones being sold private party tend to have branded titles and the asking price is too high. I also am picky; it must have bluetooth and must not have solar roof or larger wheels.

...getting back to the original thread, it seems the OP was itching to buy a new and was looking for others to confirm that desire. My only point is that within his requirement of getting rid of a car before 200k, he still has a ways to go with the current Prius. Buying a new one of the same generation and trading in the paid-off car doesn't make any financial sense, and isn't much of an upgrade in features, performance, etc.

It appears that over half the people on this forum are either bad at math (finances), or allow themselves to be primarily driven by desire instead of reason.

Um as an investor with oil companies, that makes no sense at all.

I'm not seeing what the relationship between you being invested in oil is, and basic economics. Please elaborate.

"Branded titles"? What are they? Titles with liens on them? That's hardly unusual, because the lien stays on even when paid off until the next owner. Also, larger wheels can be swapped for smaller ones.

Branded is anything other than a clean title, and is generally used to describe salvage or rebuilt title status on the west coast. This always indicates that damage has resulted in an insurance write-off of the vehicle. For some reason, most all Prii sold on CL in the PDX area have a branded title, and the seller is Russian.

Good point. I'm all for going that route. I also want to avoid some of the other options that are standard on the package V such as electric seats and headlight cleaners. None are deal breakers for me, but I'd have to find one at a great price, and that's unlikely when looking at the top model.

    Redpoint5,
Seems like a PiP would be perfect for you. They are having some great deals on your coast right now, too.

That would be my dream. I've got a 7 mile commute, and I could probably get work to allow me to charge on site. Now the only trouble is, finding someone that wants to let a PiP go for $17k.

For $17k you probably wouldn't be able to find one with less than 50k miles on it. Why not just spend a few extra thousand and buy new?

With that commute, you can get a used Leaf. You also live in the perfect climate for one.
