I've heard about the Exide Edge AGM too, but didn't find it available locally. Due to my state's core charge policy to encourage returning batteries for recycling I thought I'd rather just swap mine for a new one at a local store than order online. The store brand batteries have lower ratings (Amp-Hours, warranty, etc.). I don't know how close they are to the quality of the Exide Edge or other name brands. I wasn't aware of Toyota's longer warranty, but the short life of my original battery left me unimpressed (which may be due to how easily it's damaged by leaving a dome light on). I've now replaced my Toyota battery with an Optima, which claims to tolerate deep discharge.

The Optima claims a lot of things........but seems to be having trouble delivering recently.
Do a search here for Optima for some unsettling stories.

On March 1, 2014; I ordered the Optima 8171-767 yellow-top deep cycle battery from Streetsideauto.com for $ 147.05; and with free shipping. I think I got a pretty good deal.:)
I hope this battery fits OK !!

For one thing, I see the Toyota Truestart Prius battery (apparently still made in Japan by GS Yuasa) now shows 45 AH while the Optima is 38 AH. I wonder if GS Yuasa has learned from the failures of the OEM 12V (or not, only time will tell). It comes with 2-year free replacement followed by 5 years prorated (total 7 years warranty). Exide Edge also has 45 AH capacity and a 4 year warranty. The O'Reilly Super Start is 46 AH IIRC, not sure about warranty... All in all, I am not too enthused by the Optima currently primarily because of the low capacity....

ADDITION: I believe the Exide warranty is 4-year free replacement.
ADDITION: Per O'reilly web-site SuperStart has a 3-year "limited" warranty.

So, this points to an issue with the capacity and deep-cyclability of the specific 12V that Toyota shipped the car with. Non-OEM batteries such as the Optima seem to be faring much better due to their higher capacity and the ability to withstand more than a couple of deep cycles. Some people even go as far as saying these batteries do really have an easy time in the Prius application.

Looks like this thread is a bit on the old side... I have a 2010 Prius, with the original battery still. It's now 7 years old, and is finally ready for replacement, since it's showing 11.9v after sitting for a day (roughly 40% capacity). I'm surprised to read that people have had so much trouble with the original batteries supplied by Toyota. I totally drained my battery shortly after purchasing the car, because I left the map light on overnight. But a jump got me going. I have not treated the 12v battery gently over the last 7 years, because I have a 1,000w inverter connected directly to it, off of which I've cooked rice (800w rice cooker, 20-30 minutes), run a small microwave (rated at 600w, but it actually draws close to 900w), and during a power outage, supplied power to our basement freezer, phone system, and internet for 3.5 hours. Admittedly, the Prius gas motor starts up periodically to keep the battery charged up, these things are not running off the 12v battery by itself.

The Prius battery is used for the on-board computer, to unlock doors, open windows, run the startup stuff like pumps, but does not crank the starter motor like in most cars. So the old rule of batteries "only last 4-5 years," or a map of climate doesn't really apply to the Prius 12v battery - it applies to cars that use the 12v battery to start the car (cranking the starter motor in normal cars takes a huge load). So I expect the small Prius 12v battery to last a long time, and I think 7 years is a good long time.

Yes, the Toyota battery costs a bit more, but after reading about third party batteries here and other places, it seems quality control may not be very good for third party batteries - some seem to last a long time, others (even the same brand) seem to die a young death. So I plan to replace my 7 year old 12v battery with another Toyota 12v battery. If it fails, it's a short trip to the dealership.

The sticker that says "Never add water" and "Do not open" meant nothing to you? These are not normal batteries, they are sealed for safety, especially so that hydrogen gas doesn't escape into your car and blow up. (OK, probably not likely, but there's a reason there's a tube on the battery to allow off-gassing to escape to the outside. Break the battery seal, and you defeat the purpose of that safety feature.)

Just thought I would put in my experience, Ive owned my 2007 model since late 07 and am just now seeing signs of low 12V battery, so nearly 10 years 135k miles of use and even had the main hybrid battery replaced, the 12V battery did rather well. I did jump start it about a year ago but ran fine until now. May just need another jump start but I think its time to replace. I may go with the original from Toyota.

Do a Google search on the Optima for this vehicle.
I did - and found one for $148.00 on the Top right - hand comparisons.

it might be cheaper to buy a gen 4. it comes with a new battery, and you get a bunch of other neat stuff.

The gen 4 battery looks to be more conventional, in the engine bay, regular size posts. Doesn't look to be AGM, and has uncovered/accesible cell caps, larger, and accordingly more resilient?

(The OP does not have a Gen 4) The Gen 4 battery does not share space with the occupants of the car, so the safety requirements are more lax than Gen 2 and 3.

It is one reason he is on my ignore list, but mostly his deliberately bad advice.
