TRD Rear Sway Bar

I go mine for $220. from this Toyota dealer:

Web site says this item requires addition of an end-link kit. Is this true?

 

I didn't purchase the replacement end-link with mine. It was all in the box.

 

Hey all, I've been trying to read up on this sway bar on the forums and I've been getting mixed signals for this mod. My salesman @ Toyota says I need the endlinks, as do some online stores (even amazon). "Requires PTR11-47011 kit"

However, some people said no need. So...what's the deal? Do I need a separate kit to install this? Confused.

 

The end links came with mine. I think this was the part number

Why are you on this thread installing the sway bar? Is it for performamce or stability?

Both, I suppose. Just want a "tighter" handling car.

 

I asked because I'm having problems with my 2010 Prius wandering in the lane at highway speeds. Some people on Priuschat have said the TRD rear sway bar will fix that.

It's my understanding that the rear sway bar is a good investment "bang for the buck" type of modification. All I'm doing to my Prius is basically cosmetic, suspension, and wheel/tires. I've only had wandering when there are high winds on the freeway, but in Hawaii, we can't go that fast either....so...take that as you will.

 

Is the TRD sway bar something that we can install ourselves?

 

Yes, But, you will need a floor jack and two jack stands. Plus standard auto tools.

I also think that front and mid braces are a good mod. I found the mid brace on Ebay and the front brace on Amazon. Rude person's used to sell his versions. But, he might have been cut-off from PriusChat.

Toyota corrected the supports after they build my early 2010 so the front and mid supports might not make much difference on a newer Prius.

 

It shouldn't as the rear suspension has not changed. Toyota probably sells the end links separately so you can replace them after they wear-out. Finding them in the parts catalog probably makes people jump to the conclusion that you also need to buy them.

 

I've heard you can do it without jack stands if you're relatively thin and don't mind being cramped as you work.

Also, I've always been under the impression that the suspension should be loaded (read: not sitting on stands) when installing swaybars. I've installed many bars on other cars and have never let the suspension 'hang' during the install.

 

I did it without stands. Drove the car up on some thick paver stones to get more clearance. (about 5 inches or so). But, the end links bolt into bracket that holds the shock and clearance is tight. If I had to do it again I would want to take the wheels off. They advise you to use an allen wrench on one end of the end link to hold it in place while you wrench the nut on other end by the bar. Not much room between the wheel and the suspension. I didn't get the nut tight and it developed a rattle that required the wheel removal.

 

Wonder if there's a decent way to do it with the suspension loaded...
