I'm seriously thinking of selling my 2012 PIP Advanced - it has all the bells and whistles with ONLY 8300 miles on it! I'm test-driving the BMW i3 tomorrow and really thinking about going all-electric. My car has a back-up camera, satellite radio, navigation, etc - everything. Yes, I'm pretty sure I will get the Range Extender version. I hadn't seen that bit about the Leaf but I think I just want to be on more electricity now versus a couple years from now.
I'm with you! I'd love to go all in on electric- but I drive about 60 miles/day and really need to wait till 200 mi range becomes mainstream at reasonable prices. Best of luck with the Beemer!
I have seen at least 3 or 4 2012 PiP Advanced pop up on Craigslist in the SF bay area in the price range $31k to $32k recently. But it seems like there are very few takers because the ads have been around for at least a week now. On the other hand, the 2012 PiP Base seems to fair much better with a price in the range of $24k. They come and go rapidly. You might have a better chance if you can hold out til summer when the green stickers run out.
I'm not sure that the I3 REX is going to work out well for people who want to use that extra range often. It seems to have been designed more for occasional use and to eliminate range anxiety...
2c, we "graduated" from an EV with a real world range of 60-70 miles (82 EPA) to PiP where the range indicated over 500 miles. Case closed. Wait! your car has 8300 miles in 2 (3?) years. You never drive more than 60-80 miles from your home base, never? An electric might just work for you.
I would be interested except BMW had to make the care design so ugly, inside and out. Plus the price tag is kind of steep too, I did a build and it came out at $52,625 then the fed tax incentive brings it down to $44,125. If only BMW made the design a little nicer, more fluid and dynamic looking like their other cars.
If you're willing to drive to Sacto you can get a new PiP advanced for about 3oK. 2014 Toyota Prius Plug-in Advanced - Sacramento, CA Then there's the CA and Fed? incentives.
24k for a 2012 i paid about 24.5k for a 2013 NEW-exclusive of taxes etc that's a little pricey if you ask me Diane's selling her 2014's for < 24k!
But then you won't be going all electric. The local BMW dealer had a few running around Boulder for test drives a couple of weeks back. I think they look pretty decent in person.
I sold my 2012 Advanced PIP for $26,500, the buyer paid for the shipping to California (so figure that was another $1,500), so about $28K total to the buyer. My car was less than a year old, with low mileage, it had floor mats, mud flaps, lower body trim, door edge guards, lot of extras... I probably could have held out for a slightly higher price, but I used the money to partially reduce my home equity loan on the Model S. Good luck.
...a penny for your thoughts...are you thinking there will be high temporary demand for used/new PiP just before the green stickers run out? Let's think about this for a minute, when the CA green stickers runs out, we should probably brace ourselves for a significant reduction in PiP sales and all Plug_ins? If so, the OP has a timing issue of needing to sell before the potential price drop. Questions- Does the green sticker run out for all EV's or just PHEV's?
My opinion is that there will be temporary drop in demand for NEW PiPs when the green stickers run out because people who buy them for the green stickers would not be buying them anymore. These people instead could be searching for used PiPs which already have the green stickers on OR look at cars with the white stickers like the Nissan LEAF. The white stickers have no limitation as to how many can be issued. In the past, when the yellow stickers ran out, the cars with the yellow stickers command a price premium over those without the stickers.
^^^OK gotcha...thanks CA HOV rules sound quite different to VA, so that's why I was not following your logic. Got it now though, I think...implication is Heather needs to get a green pass to hold PiPA value (assuming she does not have one?)
I agree. My BMW i3 won't be here until at least May (if I take the one they have earmarked for me) or August if I end up ordering exactly what I want. I DO have the green HOV stickers so that will help as a selling tool although I sort of doubt they are a) going to hit the 40,000 stickers by July and/or b) won't add on more just to keep the incentive since fewer PIPs are being sold than everyone thought would be sold to date. So, regardless, we'll see! That's exactly what I will do - eliminate range anxiety. Yes, I have 8300 miles in just under 2 years so I really just don't drive that much. A city car with a range extender for the occasional trip to Orange County or Santa Barbara is pretty perfect for me. I totally disagree. I think it's a really fun looking car inside and out.
