recently some construction in my parking lot at work got some crap all over my beautiful black paintjob... nothing would take it out but a claybar job and a new coat of wax.

i don't have time (work and trail biking while the weather doesn't SUCK) and DH is working all the time, we decided to go with a professional detailer. we figured the professional's opinion, plus an invoice for work performed would be more convincing to the construction company to pay up.

although i'm told that university risk management will push the issue if the construction people give me a hard time.

anyway, the appointment is tomorrow at 9am. and this is the first time my poor little car is going to be driven by anyone but me or DH, excepting the person who drove it off the truck and the guy who did the state inspection before we took it home.

i'm nervous. i called up the owner and asked if his guys have driven a hybrid before. he said yes.

but i think i'm going to make sure before i leave the keyfob in their hands. and even then i'll put one of those valet cards in there and turn off the smartkey.

the owner is a super nice guy, i'm not worried about getting screwed over... just want to be sure the car is in competent hands is all...

well i'll report back tomorrow after work. hopefully my electrophile will be pretty again :(

Good luck -- I'm sure your car will be fine. I wouldn't worry too much about them not knowing how to drive the Prius. I think the worst thing they might do based on lack of Prius knowledge would be leaving the car on and running it out of gas -- but you're only leaving it for one day, so if it has plenty of gas even that shouldn't be a problem.

May I suggest that you give them your cell phone number (if you have one) and emphasize that if they have ANY questions about operating your car, or if something just doesn't seem quite right, that they call you immediately.

Take lots of "before" pictures in case anyone gives you trouble. Get a camera that does good macro pics to show the specks.

oh... didn't do that. they're absolutely tiny specks, but the detailer said he is certain it's construction related. and since the total bill will be just shy of $200 and there's no major vehicle damage, the contractor should pay for it no problem. i've got 3 offices at the university ready to back me up if they give me a hard time. the facilities manager said there wouldn't be a problem if i got it fixed up today.

they said it was so bad they would need all day, which was fine by me since i'll be at work until 5 or 6 anyway. it just means i get a ride to and from work in the really plush top-of-the-line avalon that DH is working on today.

ack, no. no claybarring for me. i'm in pain from a hardcore trail last night.

DH would have enjoyed seeing that too. sorry to disappoint

only 3 more hours till i get my car back... assuming i'm done with my experiments in 3 hours... which at the moment is not looking promising since i'm on PC... yeah back to work i go, trying to dissolve this stupid compound in something that won't wreak havoc on my assay... <_<

I had a semi blow a tire on the interstate the RS fog light, bumper , headlight and hood caught the brunt of the rubber....

The only thing that broke was the grill "whew".

I tried everything to get the black marring out of the paint, A friend used a clay-bar and out it came I was really impressed!!!

No after the clay bar application we washed the front of the car with chlorox bleach and water to get the bugs off.... (lol had you going)

Yes we waxed the whole car with liquid carnuba wax, it looks brand new
also steam cleaned the inside it alos looks brand new (I paid $39 for the seat cleaning and protectant application, It was worth it).!

    the verdict is in...

oh my god my car is beautiful

they did such a great job on it. i found a couple surviving specks and the owner jumped up and took care of them right there. the glass is all smooth again, the paint feels like sheer glass, the protectant they put on there afterward gives the car a deep shine without being overly glossy.

i expected to lose a bit of mpg, as is typical when handing off a prius to someone who doesn't regularly drive one. they told me they had to chase the sunbeams to make sure they were getting everything off- their back lot is pretty shaded. and i really don't care what they had to do to my mpg (dropped by 1) to do it, because the car just looks amazing.

and the way i was treated was fantastic. they were so nice, and so willing to help and take on this huge nasty job and they really wanted me to be happy.

    Bunkey's on 15/501 in Durham gets a five-star rating from me. :D

Sheesh good luck. I'm fairly good with how most surfactants, reagents, acids, alkalines etc work, at least in industrial use, but to not have residuals that fubar your assay ... got me stumped.

That and I'm feeling a bit floaty from all the wine sampling this evening. Oi.

Seriously, I've claybared my Prius every fall and spring before smearing on the NuFinish, and it's very easy. Also very satisfying, you think the paint is clean and shiny, it's 100% better afterwards.

dissolved 12 mg/mL in DMSO, diluted 40 uL per mL assay buffer, went ahead with the serial dilution (powers of 10). highest residual DMSO per assay was 0.4% so it should be golden. i wasn't gonna stick around and wait for the scintillation counter but nothing came crashing out of solution which is more promising than i'd been seeing previously. using methanol was f***ing up my assays.

i'm happy with the claybar job. i don't think i'd want to do it myself, there's a limit to the amount of my time i allow the car to take up

    wine "sampling" are you? ;)

The nice gay couple down the hall. They also invited over a couple of single women from work and I strongly suspect they're trying to set me up again. This is getting old.

But hey, they're good cooks and have good wine. Who am I to decline??

Wait... they invited "a couple" of single women that you think they're trying to set you up with? Wow, they think you can handle 2 at a time, huh?

Geez, no I can *not* handle 2 at a time! But my condo neighbors know from experience I'm picky and not easily impressed. Ann and Simone were nice, but I just didn't click with either.

Ann does Claims Processing and Simone recently moved up from Network Technician to Network Supervisor. I have to admit it's a wee bit touching that I have neighbors who are a *lot* more interested in my lifelong happiness than I am.

Still it was a good evening: perfect hosts, nice people, good wine, excellent food, etc.

    Sorry to disappoint.

Ah, our friend DMSO returns. Ok this is turning into a mystery it would help if I knew *what* you were dissolving.

How did the residuals work out??
