PIP Mileage deterioration

    My 12v batt got disconnected yesterday- this morning my EV estimate was at 14.1mi :D
    Of course I still only got 9 mi out of it because it was 16F again here this morning.

    FWIW- the radio did keep my presets. Seems I only lost my Feb trip odo/mpg data.

    Averaging 88 mpg is pretty good, 41 mph Hum....? a lot of highway driving?
    EV driving is better if mph average is around an average of 25 mph or so.
    Save EV miles for in town and use HV for highway if you can.

    Hi everyone. Me again. Thanks to all who shared their mileage information. I've now had my PIP a little over a year, and it would appear that after resetting the system that once, the battery is showing a range typically between 9.6 and 11.6 miles... it has never dropped back to the low 9s or 8s as it had before I took it into the shop. Maybe it was a software glitch... given the announcement today that 2 million Prius' are being recalled for a software glitch, I guess it is not outside the realm of possibility.

    I've read through this thread and there have been some great contributions. I think the general consensus is that one should expect about 10 to 11 miles in EV under normal driving conditions. Some people do better, very few do worse. After a year or so, I'm averaging 65 MPG, and I'm at about 18% EV usage. I would imagine that most people are seeing similar kinds of numbers.

    I also saw today a post from Retired 4999 that he used to get 150MPG and now he is getting 49MPG. I don't know how in the heck you ever got 150MPG unless you went on dozens of 8 mile trips with all accessories off and went on the freeway one day a year.

    I think that Toyota is doing a disservice to its customers by showing bar graphs in the brochures of 80, 90, or 100MPG. That kind of mileage is simply NOT attainable if you drive on freeways, use the heater, or drive over 10 miles... My guess is that real world, practical and typical use numbers for the PIP are as follows:

    EV mileage: 10.5 miles typical
    MPG in mixed-use: 60 to 65MPG.
    EV/HV split in typical use: 20% EV, 80% gas.

    I have NEVER EVER come close to the 95MPG EPA sticker, even when taking lots of short trips and recharging between each trip. Maybe in downtown Tokyo or NYC you might get this, but not in the suburbs where you get on the freeway.

    My big request for improvement in the PIP system is for the user to be able to select the ability to recharge the EV battery while driving on the freeway for extended periods. I would gladly sacrifice a few horsepower and even a couple of MPG if I could pull off a freeway and cruise another 10 miles in EV mode. I know that's not outside the realm of possibility since coasting down Highway 17 out of Santa Cruz here in the Bay Area will darn near recharge the EV battery up to full charge just based on regenerative braking. So how 'bout it Toyota? A software upgrade to allow us to control EV recharging so we can make better use of the EV system in freeway commutes? Does Toyota even read these forums? Moshi moshi?

    Overall, I have to say I'm now fairly pleased with the power train of the Prius. I'm thrilled for the first 10 miles every morning, and love cruising to the store and back with nary a tailpipe fume. After a year of ownership, the only really downside of the vehicle is the Entune system. I really wish they had gone with a different system in the base model (the Advance model has a different, much better system). It is TERRIBLE. I'm constantly frustrated and angered by the tons of bugs and performance issues when performing basic functions that makes the car's acceleration look like a Tesla model S in comparison. Adding to the embarrassment is the fact it was apparently designed by Harman's Silicon Valley Group... shame on the engineering team for releasing such a buggy piece of dung and tarnishing the Valley's reputation for excellent product design. Had I known that it would be so inconsistent and buggy, I seriously would have considered another vehicle, perhaps even paying the premium to get the Advance system with the different (read: better) Entune implementation.

    It's 95 MPGe, not 95 MPG. Huge difference. And dedicating the gas engine to charge the battery is inefficient.

    If you live in Southern CA we're talking warm and 8.5 is ridiculously low unless you're drag racing that 3miles to work. I'd join that class action lawsuit :ROFLMAO:

    as for that lawsuit - come on... Its been like 7 degrees mornings around here and I'm killing that 48 mpg the few times I do dip into ICE. Maybe he's not charging at all and using constant heat

    Yea but wouldn't his point still be valid? Because calculating straight MPG means you're not considering the cost of electricity, which means once you do your MPGe number will always be lower than your MPG number. Which means 95 MPGe could be equal to 115 MPG or something like that. So his point is valid. He's not anywhere near close to advertised combined fuel economy.

    Please correct me if I am wrong in my understanding of the MPGe calculation. I admit that I could be.

    Check out my fully page for my fill ups for the past 22 months.
    You will see that I have a 250-450 mile trips in almost all my fill ups on the interstate system.

    i used to get close to 13mi in warm weather 60+
    now i get < 12.5mi
    not sure whats going on :(

    temp went back up to 60s and i still get <12.5. been 60+ in sj this week.
    when it was 60+ (couple of weeks ago) i got close to 13 sometimes > 13.

    I live in LA and my range is around 10.3 miles (estimate showed 10.1 this morning) I wonder if you experience this. I seem to get well above the range estimate when the battery if close to full but when the battery is close to empty I seem to do a lot worse than the range estimate, and that is driving the same route in pretty much the same conditions.

    I'm down to 8.7 estimated EV range, after tonight we will have had 48 days below zero since Dec 1. Now the good news starting tomorrow we will beging to rise in temps, which means I will start to climb back up in EV range, slowly and by August I should be back up in EV range to about 16-18 Estimated EV range! Spring and summer are on there way! :D
