Grill blocking is sticking foam pipe insulation in the lower front grill of your PiP. Blocks cold air from cooling the ICE while your driving in EV mode or on electric in HV mode. Mostly used in the northlands where temps have been below freezing since last fall and heater use is needed. Grill blocking is not something I would suggest for your climate and terrain. Daily and day to day temperature fluctuations plus mountain climbing might lead to overheating.

So a few weeks ago when it was five below zero I went to the store. The store is on a mountain top across the valley. When I came out and started the Chevy SG said the coolant temp. was 170f. It's all down hill from the parking lot for more than a mile. Coasting with the ICE fast idling and the heat off when I got to where I needed to more gas the coolant temp had dropped to 100f. This was just from the air coming in the grill. This is when grill blocking is effective.

    James,

    Here goes,

Trip to Vegas-34 EV miles, 106 mpg (consumption) 99 mpg at engine turn off.

Trip to Pahrump- 31 EV miles, 88mpg (consumption ) 75 mpg at engine turn off.

I am so excited I can't sleep. The results are unbelievable and I have surpassed anything I could have imagined. Can it get any better? Lol.

I need to find a place for my wife to charge at work or close by. We do have some free charging station that run on 220. This is our next step.

Hi Potorap, I guess I've been oblivious of your thread here. What exactly are you doing to get your incredible results, do you have a mountain pass with long downhill descents each way?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Hi Bill,

I travel nearly 60 miles each way to work. I have a decent from 5500ft to 2700 ft on each side. Before James Burke made his suggestion, I had been using all my electric charge 12-14 est miles at the beginning of my journey home/work. I was getting 8-10 actual miles.

Now I save about 10 miles of est EV miles until I reach the top of the mountain(30miles) I then put the car in EV mode and and regenerate most of the way to each destination. On the way home I run the engine for about 3 minutes which is about 3 miles.

Also, because I am getting more EV miles on each run, my full charge has increased to 24.6 est EV miles. Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

I have taught my wife the same technique. I am going to try and have her save EV miles until the top of the mountain and see if she can make it home without charging at work.

    Thanks again James.

You have quite a unique situation, having that hill in the middle. Pretty cool! Nothing at all similar here on the coast of Maine. Still, the high mileage I am able to get is pretty incredible compared to what I used to drive. It would be interesting to hear if your extended EV situation improves even more as the weather warms into summer. Keep us posted.

This weekend highs near 80f lows around 50f in Vegas/Pahrump. When it warms up they will need the A/C.

Speaking of Vegas, there are a few casinos that have a couple of free charger spots now for guests. More if you have that old Tesla but they don't have adapters for anything else. Vegas city has free ones in their garage but it's $.75/30min to park. Free parking with voucher if you had to go to city hall to say pay a parking ticket. If you had a Tesla or Leaf would it pay to get a ticket just to park for free? Hmm.

Potorap are they still working on the 4 lane widening of Blue Diamond or whatever on the way to the mountain?

    Hi James,

Yes the first phase is complete. Not sure if/when the second phase will happen.

Mandalay Bay is one, also the Mirage is installing a double station and a single station for tesla's.
