Not sure if this should be here or technical but wondering if anyone else experienced this. While driving appx. 45mph with maybe one bar above center on Eco gauge. Engine would idle then rev, idle then rev, almost like it wanted to go ev but because the heat was on it wouldn't at the last second ... Anyone know if this issue or a bulletin ? This is on my late 2012 v2 Thanks
Maybe off topic but what was the status of the HV battery SOC? The engine will rev like you describe if the SOC is around 80% as it spins the ICE to discharge the HV battery. Were you going down any hills at the time?
The battery was up 80%, I had been driving for 15-20 mins. On the hybrid indicator I was one bar above middle. Rolling 45-47 mph. Relatively flat ground. Engine warm to temp. Outside temps in single digits to low teens.... Heat at 70-72 auto mode.... The blower never seems to come off below 2 bars from full speed. I find backing it down a couple bars actually heats better.... Anyway, those were the conditions, and it's noticeable enough to feel. I have experienced what your referring to....such as pulling up to a stop and when I hit the brake the ice actually revs up a bit to a faster idle, but this is an oscillating rev, idle, rev, idle.... In about 1 second intervals.
If the battery was at 80% the ICE will do what you describe. There have been many others that have described this same situation. It is the HV battery controller using MG1 to spin the ICE to throw off battery charge level. The battery controller wants to maintain SOC around the 60% range, halfway between the 40% minimum and 80% maximum.
FWIW, this is the speed at which the ICE cuts in and out by design. Above 46 and the ICE has to run, below 46 and you can get EV mode. Sounds like your system was just turning the ICE on and off.
