Gasoline Gauge not filling up/not taking gasoline

Have to ask two questions.

1. Since you initially added fuel and noticed the problem, how far have you driven until you added fuel again?
2. What is the most amount of fuel you have ever added at one time since you took ownership?

 

At this point you've pumped 9 gallons, and you've disconnected the 12V battery for a few minutes. Upon reconnection, make the Prius READY. If you don't find that the fuel gauge registers a correct reading after several minutes have passed, then it is time to visit your local Toyota dealer for help. It could be that the fuel level sensor has failed, the wiring harness is bad, or the combination meter has failed.

 

87 Octane Regular Fuel

I think you need to make a trip to the dealer. You have tried and exhausted pretty much all the methods here on PC. Next step would be to ask the dealer to diagnose the problem.

Patrick Wong mentioned this earlier in this string, and at this point I concur with his statements. Sorry that I can't be of better assistance. It is pretty obvious that there is a mechanical failure and that repairs or replacement of parts are in order to solve your problem.

Please let us know what the final resolution is.

No, because the cost depends upon what is wrong. Plan to spend in the high-three digits.

 

I just wish we could go back to the horse-and-buggy days. The horse needs fuel, you feed it, voila; no fuel sensor, combo meter, etc to worry about. But about those emission controls...

 

If you feel that way, maybe you should buy a car from the 1960s since the only emissions control would be a PCV valve. However most of those cars are not particularly reliable when compared to modern vehicles, for example consider engine and transmission life. You would be lucky to hit 100K miles without having a major problem. And the fuel economy would not be anything to write home about.

Oh, and if you have a frontend accident you'll be impaled by the steering column. Other than that, its all good.

what if the dealer he bought it from or the previous owner topped off the tank too many times and got fuel outside of the bladder thus reducing its capacity...????

 

If fuel was outside of the bladder, but inside the metal tank where the bladder exists, a DTC code would be set as the system is monitored for leaks that are built into the system.

I don't think this has anything to do with the OP's problem. It is obvious that one of the components in the system is malfunctioning, but until it is properly diagnosed it is best guess.

I am not aware of a drain of any sort.
