Just bought an 06 Prius (w/nav) and aftermarket installer wants $1800 to upgrade stero with amp, subwolf and all new speakers (with iPod connector) and floor sound dampening. Other then the speakers not being crisp, I'm not sure I want (need) a sub woofer. Anyone just upgrade the speakers and happy with the results?

I take it you have the upgrade JBL system? I have a package #3, non-JBL, and followed the suggestions in the knowledge base. This weekend I just put Infinity Kappa 63.7's in the rear, and the 60.7 component speakers in the front, and the difference is remarkable. The weak part of the sound system definitely was the speakers. A sub might be nice, but I'm 47, and not really into that. Besides, I don't want to take up any of the storage space. :p
Here's some info on updating the JBL:

I do have the upgrade (leather with nav) package so maybe just upgrading the speakers will get me where I want to go. It's probably worth trying first. I had seat warmers added (I have a bad back and the heat helps with long commutes) so while they are pulling the seats out and wiring for the heaters, I asked about adding sound deading to the floor. $600. I made the mistake of asking about Sirius and that led to re-wiring and an amplifier to power the upgraded speakers. So, now it's $1700 (inclusiove of tax) for everything. I am going to try the speakers first and put the seats on hold until I get a chance to get test the upgraded speakers.

Thanks for the information! I'll post how it goes.

Went ahead and had the sound dampening flooring while heated seat option added. Then, a Sirius and amp and speaker replacement. $1.7k with tax for all. Seats are Warmderful! and the speakers are awesome. Sirius works great too with station, artist and song title showing on the Prius screen. On screen speaker adjustment works too (even while driving.) No change to phone (screen works while driving too.) I mistakenly left the paperwork on the counter of the store so I don't have details of each component. Will be glad to post those if anyone is interested.

I'd be interested to know WHAT Sirius radio they installed? Was it a factory option model, the one made for the Solara? Just curious how they got it to display on the MFD. Do you receive it on FM, or on the AUX input?

It was the Solara Radio and they had to program the chip. The store is in San Juan Capistrano, CA next to a service area for Family Toyota. Nextwave AutoSport 33033 Camino Capistrano, SJC, CA 92675. Ask for Mike at (949) 276-7777. GREAT service and very knowledgable folk. Use only Toyota stuff and obviously have been doing it for years.

The only down side is you can not hook up a sub woofer with the stock radio (level 7) even though it is upgraded, without an extra amp. which still requires an analog volume control. I don't need a sub woofer but more base would be nice!
