I recently purchased a used 2008 Prius that does not have the black square on the door handle and I have to put the fob in the slot and push to start the car. So I guess it is a non-sks. It came with two key fob. One was with black Toyota logo on back and had a metal key inside it. I can lock/unlock the door and can start the car. The other one had silver Toyota logo on back and it was missing the metal key. I can only start the car with it, but cannot lock/unlock door remotely. I recently lost the fob with black logo and metal key. So with the fob with silver logo I can only start the car but cannot lock the door, which is dangerous. I know I can program a second key if I have one that is working. But in my case I only have one key now and that does not work. So is there anyway I can program it without the original? If not I am looking for the cheapest way to make it work. Will buying a metal key help me other than physically using it to unlock doors? Or should I just pay a dealer to program the fob that I have. Any feedback will be appreciated.

you should take it to a dealer and see what your options are
when I purchased my car, it came with a little silver ID on the keyring which had a code on it
I am assuming you do not have that
I once heard if they had to 'program' a new set of keys from scratch, that it was over one thousand dollars - not sure what it would be today. Just getting another fob and programming it - is several hundred dollars.

    Good Luck!

Thank you. I have tried that earlier, but it requires me to have a key that works already. I have lost mine. The one I have can only start the car.

Then the dealer or a locksmith is your only choice. I personally would look very hard for the missing fob. It has to be somewhere but, I'm sure you have already done that. Beyond that, its a tough fix for a DIYer.

what does the "little silver ID on the key ring means"? I had it when I got my car but didn't think anything of it. I hope I didn't lose it.

I believe the silver ID ring is used to cut a new "metal" key. It has the key information for the dealer to make another key. It's not used to duplicate a lost key original key.

Yes it is the number sequence to set up the key cutting machine at the dealer. It allows them to cut you a duplicate mechanical key that will open the doors if your fob quits working.

Ok thx, I need to find that little silver ID and hang on to it. I thought it was something left over by the dealer.

I think if you provide your vehicle VIN# to the dealer, they would have on file the information to make a duplicate metal key. I don't think it's important to have that silver ID, may just be something to use at a locksmith.

Glad to hear because I looked for it but I couldn't find it.
