Prius ranks at top of Consumer Reports survey

We continue to be proud of our toy.

 

Consumer Reports can wail til the cows come home that Prius is the best value car on the market .... still, the liftback will sell about 10k or so units a month (US) while the real big dogs, Camry, Accord, Altima, Civic, Corolla etc... sell up in the 20 to 25k+ units / month range .... I just cannot imagine why .....

ho ho ho ...... just kidding. I know why....

take away the 50 MPG and you are left with basically a different shaped Corolla that happens to cost 6 grand more. In terms of comfort, ride quality, interior noise, power, handling ... what does Prius have over a Corolla besides 50 MPG, a hatchback and convenience features???

 

Yup! .....We get 51+ mpg on a twelve month cycle that includes a Mich. winter..... For us it's approx. a $2500.00 annual net pay increase because of fuel cost savings alone......

 

Well, I only have my 2004 Prius for less than 3 years, and my cost is 10 cents/mile, including maintenance, gas, insurance, depreciation, and even traffic tickets

So having a Prius is great. Drive a good used Prius is fantastic!

 

A used Element sounds like what you get in an electric jug.

The good journalist STILL managed to find a way to slam the Prius - by doling out misinformation:

Can you imagine? ... comparing the interior room of the Prius (passengers & cargo), to the Fit?!? You KNOW the so-called journalist is doing that out of malace. What ... he can't find any crib notes anywhere that show the prius as a mid sized car? No where do they say Prius, Prius V or Prius C. They did manage to point out the Ford P/up 250 was a heavy duty truck ... so, they know what they're implying ... and they only get specific when they want to.

Has the Corolla improved that much since 2009?

When I test drove and rented Corollas in 2009, they were not in the same league as a Gen 3 Prius for comfort, ride quality, interior noise, handling, leg room or versatility. I got rid of an Accord to buy the Prius with no regrets at all even if fuel economy was not considered and found the Prius far preferable to the Camry hybrid of the time.

Does it sound like Toyota addressed small overlap crash test in cars made after 11/2013?

OK yes being discussed here:
The Prius has been updated and those built after November 2013 now get the top rating of Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. The Camry has also been updated and those built after the same date are a Top Safety Pick.

Funny how when CR praises a certain car, especially if we like it or own it, we happily quote them, but if they slam a car we like or own, CR sucks and doesn't know anything.

Personally, all the cars I've owned pretty much match up with what CR says.

It seems to me that CR's ratings are well suited to a car like the Prius. They reward practicality, economy, and quality.

Of course, depending on what you value for a car, that may or may not be your idea of the "best".

 

All new 2014 Corolla has a pretty stately interior and dash. For my height, a little small for my taste. I rented a 2013 Corolla S, and it cornered quite a bit better than Prius. Prius liftback has pretty strange turning manners as MotorTrend called it one of the worst handling cars on the market (April 2013 issue p. 68)

I give credit to MotorTrend and Car and Driver also. I don't think Car and Driver only drives cars like trackday maniacs to declare a car good or bad. They comment on many aspects of a car: Economy, acceleration, braking, etc... , but they favor cars that are nice to drive, not boring to drive. I haven't heard C&D talk about hypermiling. I don't practice it either.

 

None of the above. It's most cost effective to sell a vehicle than to trade it in. It's also more cost effective to buy used from a private party than from the Stealership. Anyone trading in a vehicle or buying from a Stealership is clearly uninterested in saving the most money.

Fortunately, those people make used vehicles available for others at significantly reduced prices.

Except that the Prius does get 50MPG, and that is a huge selling point. Many people might choose a Civic or Corolla because they can't afford or finance the cost of a Prius, even though it might have lower long-term costs.

Glad to hear our car made the top spot in Consumer Reports. But I'm a little concerned about reliability. My 2010 Prius is 3.5 years old and has 48,000 miles on it. So it's still a fairly new car, and yet last week I had to deal with my first repair - the battery in the key fob died. I thought these things were suppose to be rock solid.

 

OMG Kermit, I think it's time to trade the old heap for a new one before the repairs bills bankrupt you! LOL
