Hi everyone. I have a 2008 Prius, original owner. Two problems. 1) When it gets cold (5F-15F) and I start the car, often the display showing the MPH is completely black. The whole strip. The cruise won't work either. Once the car runs for a half hour, or the outside temperature increases, then the display lights go on and the cruise control works. I don't know what is causing this. 2) Today it was cold and the MPH display didn't work. I drove it for only a bit and when I parked in my driveway the car would not shutdown. The engine sounded like it was down, the MPH display was black BUT the center display was on and lighted. I tried holding the Power button down to have it reset but the darn thing would not fully power down. Eventually it did power down completely after trying different things. Also not sure what was going on here. Any help would be appreciated.
Probably a new display is needed. Toyota will change it for free even out of factory warranty. No shutdown is part of the issue. They issued an extension of warranty for this part when and if needed. I keep my copy of the notice in the car. The dealer can look it up.
Combination Meter Warranty Enhancement | PriusChat I just told the dealer what had happened and they knew about the extended warranty. Pretty painless. You shouldn't have to pay anything.
This might help you also. You have all the symptoms of a bad combo meter. To shut down hold the power button down for a minimum of three seconds. Some have trouble even with that, but keep holding it down until the Prius powers down completely. Read and print the pdf file for more info.
