Cold air Intake? - Not a Joke or Noob question

    my custom intake was built mostly to make some room under the hood, I went out of my way to match the stock air meter, so that it won't perform any different, either way any mod will vary your performance to a degree, notice how I said vary not increase.
    first filter I tried, an hks knockoff, actually lowered power output, granted it was just on top of the airmeter, no CAI, but it was a bit restrictive I guess, no codes, less power and a bit better economy.
    the second filter, a reusable cotton mesh, k&n type performed rather similar to the stock setup, again, no CAI,
    my final setup, with the shield built around the filter, it wasn't just a CAI but also a bit of a Ram intake as it drew air in from below the hood lip. that worked real good, again no codes,
    the key to it, I believe was the air meter, there is no commercially available, 1 3/4 inch I believe it was, regardless of the setup before that, weather it is restricted, cold or warm, it doesn't matter as long as the computer can get an accurate reading, it will make proper adjustments, performance will be reflected as well but all in all it will be no different than running at sea level on 90F weather versus, up at 12000 ft at -40F or anywhere in between,
    When you go and put a 3" meter with the stock MAF, than you are asking for trouble, besides it's pointless, the intake will be restricted by the smallest component, the TB mostly, so there is no point at all to go any larger than the TB at WOT, you can get a smoother run if anything, the stock intake is a CAI anyhow, may be a bit restrictive for noise purposes, honestly I don't mind intake noise, I prefer simple over introcate restrictive silencers.
    as for dino tests, reflashing ecus, and all that is quack as far as I am concern, it's a prius for crying out loud, what else can I say

    Actually the best place to put a filter for cold air is directly behind the intake manifold near the firewall, plus you wont get as much water on the filter back there.

    But your then up against the exhaust header though. Very tight and hot back there.

    intake is on the front of the ice, and there's no room above the hot ex manifold for a filter. nope. under and behind the rh headlight is the best place, and unless you drive through a creek, your not gonna suck any water. i've had mine there for many miles, no problems.

    As you drive the hot air is forced downwards. The engine is shut off when stopped and the extra heat from the exhaust when stationary in the winter would be beneficial for cold starting and warming the car up faster. If the intake is aluminium heat will not bother it as bad because aluminium dissipates heat efficiently. also while driving the air will be coldest in this location and therefore more dense. It is a tight spot for an air filter but is doable with some work.

    Nifty machine in that pic. must be in Oz cause the steering shaft is on the wrong side. anyhow, if you were to put temp sensors behind the motor and under the headlight, i'd bet on cooler temps under the headlight 99% of the time.

    I'm not even going to coment on this one, I saw the crushed dryer vent setup a while back, what can I say, I'm speechless.

    This setup worked fine for me - routed below the passenger headlight.

    Rotated the MAF housing to see if it made a difference - none. Worked great either way as long as you stay with a 2" MAF housing.

    but where can we get a 2" housing inexpensively? i would ditch the airbox if i could.

    If I don't end up fixing my car, I'll prob end up parting it out - including all mods - unless I end up with another Gen2...

    As for as more MAF housing, I had mine custom made. I know the guy I had make mine would make more but only if he was making a batch of them. The piece I had custom made was only the part that holds the MAF sensor, it still needed to be welded on to a 2" tubing.

    how is it going with your car? i never did see what the latest was. did they total it out? i hope it isn't bent too bad to fix. one of the nicest cars on here.

    cmon man, that's nothing, fender, bumper, torches maybe a weekend and a case a beer looks like a scratch from here, that strut tower doesnt look dented, get it done , you got too much into it, for what I am concerned ones I got busted knuckes into it it's personal, hell I fixed a 1993 ford tempo once just cause I had some work into it recently, shoot Rock auto caries that stuff, I had the guys at maco order bodypanels for me before, paint the new parts flat black, chicks dig scars

    A bit off the Cold air intake topic but, Fist size hole in the engine block from the axle popping out of the joint and smacking the block. Hairline crack in the transmission... I do plan fixing it...when i have my own shop and area to work on. Don't know anyone reputable in San Diego area that does this type of work well. Front frame rails are both shifted over. :( Now looking for a donor car/replacement 2Gen or possible upgrade to 3Gen...

    I was showing approximately where I meant by, the air intake near the firewall because air would be most dense there. The picture was just referencing the location of which I thought would be a good spot to have an air intake for both functionality and performance.
