Lifetime Powertrain Warranty

Is the warranty still good if you decline fuel injector cleanings and other service department upselling?

They probably would say that the transaxle motor-generators are hybrid components and not cover them in case of a failure -- and these are the things in the trans that tend to go bad.

 

When they offer me that crap I tell them I don't want it and want the money credited that it cost them to offer it on the vehicle. They decline though. I told the sales person that the dealership will never see the vehicle again after the sale.

I agree with you. My hometown Stealership offered me the 2 year blah, blah, blah. At 5k I was about 1500 miles away but called and made an appointment for my 5k FREE service. When I got back home I dropped the car for my FREE service. When I went back to retrieve the car, the DIService manager explained to me that the fluids were all good, the tires were rotated, and it was washed! When I asked why the oil was not changed - "because you don't need it", although I specified it was to be changed - "well if you want it changed we'll change it - but you're paying for it". I did not have them change it! I went to the parts department and purchased a filter, Walmart to purchased the Mobil 1, and went home and changed my oil. I only return every 5ooo miles to buy my filters from the parts department.
At 36k I thought it was necessary to change my transmission fluid ( for those interested the buzz words are "drain and fill"). After calling around, I drove to another dealership 70 miles round trip, and saved $75 by going out of state ($160 plus sales tax vs $90 total) AND they let me watch so I could see the process, how deteriorated it had become and when I told them I would be doing my own in the future they gave me the washers for the transmission plugs. Oh yeah, that first free car wash put swirls in the paint that took me a weekend to polish out. I understand they no longer offer complimentary paint swirls provisions , it is now a $15 feature.
When you buy your car you probably checked for the best price, I suggest you do the same when it comes time for service.

 

My dealer had it, but I drove over 100 miles to buy from a dealer that did. It may be a third party warranty, ours was. Some are only good at the dealer you purchased from, some are good at any. Mine was good at any. If you live in the vicinity of the selling dealer then you should go to them for service, but since our selling dealer is over 100 miles away, it isn't a requirement to go back to them for service. It doesn't hurt to have it if you're getting a good deal on the car anyways....

 

Let me put it this way.
There is one maybe two Toyota dealerships in my state that advertise a free lifetime power train warranty. The Dealership I bought from did NOT offer such a perk.

I've always thought that they were primarily just an advertising ploy. Something the salesman can say, that just might make you choose that dealership on that day.

It sounds obvious but any warranty is only as good as that warranty. So without being able to read the fine print, how do I know how good a dealership offered "free" warranty may or may not be?

I can't remember ever reading a post where somebody claimed to of benefited from having such a warranty. That doesn't mean it hasn't happened, just that I don't read a lot of posts where owners are heralding the benefit.

To me? If it's free? Let it be free. In other words...when making the deal, I'd ignore this free benefit...if it truly is free, then you just make the best deal you can for the vehicle. Later? If you want to read the fine print and figure out the real benefit of whatever dealer offered free warranty? Go ahead.

My Dad bought a Toyota Rav 4 from a dealership that offers a free powertrain warranty. I suspect it often works this way. A new vehicle....non-transferable warranty, and probably the majority of people getting these warranties, end up selling or trading the vehicle WAY before failure of the powertrain would happen. So my guess is the dealerships probably very rarely are faced with really honoring these warranties for any benefit to the original buyer, or cost to themselves.

 

For ours it is a third party warranty that the dealership pays for. Since our Prius is a '12 it will be a while 'till I'll see any possible benefit and report. Got a pretty good deal from Toyota of Poway so I can't complain. (They participated in the PenFed car buying program.)

Change with filter $ 9.95 10,000 miles OR 24,000 months , if I want it more often
Still $ 9.95 ..... Just wondering , what your dealer charges for synthetic oil changes ?

 

I pay $65.00 per oil change.
