Aftermarket GPS Recomendations??

We use ProClip mounts for the Garmin 1490LMT. On the Prius v5 with its OEM Nav, we use a ProClip A-pillar mount, above the driver-side vent, for the phone.

 

I've been use "Garmin Portable Friction Mount" since 2010. it's pretty stable and doesn't move even during sharp turn. you can hide it when not using and take it to another car if you need to.

Garmin in the US is probably pretty good but their Aussie maps are pathetic. I have found TomTom to be best here.

 

True enough....but since I've already got the phone, and it already has a GPS, I just use the phone.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 1390 with lifetime map and traffic I bought a year ago for $54 (factory refurbished). I suction cup mounted it to the little window in the left A pillar. Its wire runs under the dash to the power socket in the center console. Most of the wire, except for a few inches, is hidden from view and cannot be seen. It also turns on and off automatically when I start the car or shut it down. It is out of the way, so it is legal, yet I can glance at it when I need to without taking my eyes off the road. Because it is mounted to the side, it does not bother my eyes at night either.

 

We're using a Garmin, Nuvi 2350 I think. Mounted via the supplied suction cup bracket on the little triangle window to left of windshield. I'm sure the newer models are improved. Anyway, the navigation's fine. Sarching for a destination can be a pain though. I've found it best to be armed with the street address, and to punch it in and save it as a favourite, ahead of time.

I went with TomTom because they own one of the two major providers of the geographic data. However their new MyTomTom support/update is junk compared to the older TomTomHome.

Has anyone here tried the Garmin smartphone app with their new heads up display unit?
