Hi All - Reccently purchased a 2010 Prius IV. Quite happy with the purchase so far. I've noticed that there is a noise coming from the navigation screen area of the car. The sound is of a cd player reading a disc. The car makes the noise the entire time it's powered up. I'm guessing that the noise is the navigation system "reading" the DVD disc. I hope this isn't how it's supposed to behave normally as the constant disc reading sound is quite annoying. Has anyone else had this problem before? What are the potential solutions? How can I eject the DVD to test if that is indeed the problem?
There have been some reports of a noisy GPS DVD but not many. To eject the DVD press the Info-Phone button, press Map Data and then press DVD in the lower left corner. The Nav screen will move out and then flip up. The DVD and the CD players are behind the screen. The DVD should be on the bottom and CD on the top.
Yes, though it's not necessarily a problem. When I had my 2010 if the radio was turned off I could hear the nav disk being read while driving. Others back then also noted they heard theirs if the radio was off. So, if yours is loud enough that even with the radio on you hear it there may be an issue, but I am guessing what you are experiencing is normal to the car as noted.
Thanks for all the responses. I'll try to eject the DVD later and see if that causes the sound to go away. I purchased the car "Certified Used" - so if something is indeed malfunctioning, hopefully it would be covered by the 12 month warranty that was provided.
UPDATE: Had the spinning/clicking noise checked out at the dealership, and they agreed the nav system shouldn't be making those sounds. They are going to order a brand new nav system for the car. Thankfully I purchased a certified used car, so I only have to pay $50.00 for the warranty delectable. Does anyone know what a brand new navigation system would cost?
Wow! That's crazy expensive! I guess that's why the dealership had to have a rep from Toyota corporate come approve the repairs!
I'm just noticing the sound now... I don't think I noticed it before I got the XM traffic subscription. I don't want this sucker to go out on me...
Have another update for you all. The dealer installed the complete new DVD navigation head unit, however the unit still makes the constant "disc reading" sound even with the new unit. In fact, I think this unit might be worse. I spoke with the service manager at the dealership, and he explained that the "disc reading" sounds are normal, and that they shouldn't have even replaced the nav unit in the first place. I really can't believe that the disc reading sounds should be this loud and obtrusive. The only thing I can do to stop the constant noise is to eject the navigation DVD. I don't understand why the system is is constantly reading the DVD, even when I'm not doing anything related to maps/navigation. So frustrating! I wish I had purchased a newer car that has the HDD navigation!
I posted a reply, but didn't see it pop up. Yes, they make noise. No, they shouldn't do it all the time. Been there, replaced that, quiet as a mouse most of the time. Go to the dealer and take a test drive, then, have the dealer rep take a spin in yours. It's obvious, when it's defective. clickity clack odd nauseum forever and ever. Get's on your nerves after a few hours, and you can hear it even with the engine running. My replacement only "reads" every now and then, not continuously. Fixed the problem, but it took several dealer visits, multiple 1/2 day vacations, to get it corrected. Your replacement was probably defective.
