Will the dealership fix both sides or just the passenger side that has the rattle?

I wonder whether this will be covered by certified pre-owned first year comprehensive warranty... (body trim?)

I think the screw you are talking about that you broke in order to remove is easy to take out without breaking. all you have to do is press on it in the middle with tip of screwdriver and the center will fall inside and then just push it up from bottom without breaking it. hope this helps saving hundreds of screws in world...:)

Hello once again. I took my 2011 Prius in to the dealership a week ago Tuesday, and just got it back today. I've been having the same rattling sounds that both Canard and skilbovia have made videos about (earlier in this thread). So, this was my second time visiting Toyota about this rattling problem (first time was last year ... end of Summer). To make a long story short, I rode with the technician who worked on my car. He was able to hear the rattling sound...although quieter than what he's normally heard. They kept my vehicle a few days longer than expected to call in a window company to remove the triangular pane of glass on the front passenger side near the side view mirror to get into that "rabbit hole" area that skilbovia mentions and replace clips of some kind. When I talked with the technician, he was aware of Canard's video that I had sent to him, and I also showed the tech skilbovia's video...so we both in agreement about the first part of your video where misc. things could get trapped causing a rattling sound.

Well, after I got my car back today, the rattling sound is still there...pretty much at the same volume it's always been. They said they fixed it. But to me, the rattling sound is still there...it's like they didn't do any work on my vehicle when I know they did. I'm quite frustrated, and I'm just not sure what to do next. I don't want to seem like I'm such a bother to them...but at the same time, my car is still under warranty, and I want to get it fixed.

What suggestions do you, the community, have? Looking for some ideas...thanks!

    Interesting.
Well, when they refused to do the TSB in mine, I thought they were just lazy. Now, I'm thinking maybe there were right?
Honestly, there are so many different rattles in tha dash/glove box area, I don't think you chave a chance to fix them all.

From my experience with this car (about 3 1/2 years) I don't think anyone can find and fix all the rattles. The only two choices are live with them or get rid of the car.

Is there any relevance that they have said the rattling could be due to weather conditions (hot and cold)? My experience is that this has been an issue during the entire year and not just when it starts getting colder out (I'm in Wisconsin) or when it's warm out. I can almost duplicate the issue whenever.

My car rattles quite a bit more in the winter when the plastic is cold, keeping it in the garage helps.

My Prius is always stored in the garage when I am home. Like I said, the rattling seems to be throughout the year for me. Certainly discouraging that they can't pinpoint the source. :-/

"Rattle detectives" are hard to come by and most dealers will just deny they hear an obvious rattle hoping you will give up. I just discovered the rear inner hatch cover plate had both of the hand grips loose which caused a significant rattle. I must now re-glue them and put it all back.
I have to say it's mostly the '10s and '11s that have the rattling issues. Maybe by 2012 Toyota was using softer interior plastics to solve this issue.
Review this entry and if it's the same noise, I posted a solution to it without going to the dealer:

Has there been any update to this? I took my 2011 Prius in for a third time this past week to have the dealership diagnose the rattling sound coming from the front passenger side of the car (somewhere around the dashboard/front wheel). After doing a lot of troubleshooting, they told me there is a metal plate that is under the dashboard that runs the full width of the car from the driver side to the passenger side. There were a couple nuts that were loose on the drivers side, and they replaced those nuts with lock nuts. They said those loose nuts were carrying the vibrating sound over to the other side of the vehicle...which is why I was hearing a vibrating sound on the passenger side. Unfortunately, the vibrating noise is still present, and I'm going to have to call the guy I'm working with again on Monday. I'm really at a loss of what to do now. My warranty runs out end of November, and I'd love to have this issue resolved...without having to spend extra cash.

Thanks for this information as I know about that structural tube that runs across and below the dash. I've had my dash-plate off a couple of times and never thought to check the bolts on either side it for being loose. This winter, when the rattles come back, I may pull the plate again and have a closer look at that structural tube's connecting bolts and also add lock-washers.

I found the passenger side dash rattle to be the trim plate below the small side window. It was very bad and was contemplating trading the car. If you hear the noise ask a passenger to put pressure on it, if it goes away then you have to fix it. What's the fix? Well I removed the A pillar trim, vents and trim panel at the side window. Apply plumber putty to all areas that touch any other parts then reassemble. It took me 15 minutes and it is totally gone! I took the car on the bumpiest road I know of and total silence! Hope this helps.

Plumbers putty will harden and your rattle will come back
